Title: what are people doing for os' s these days?
Post by: DEViANCE on July 08, 2013, 14:11:53 PM
As the title really...
I'm not ashamed to say for the most part Ive used dodgy copies of windows from Xp pro and 7 ultimate.
But it seems now that with my new system and its uefi bios that isnt not really an option anymore(corrupted my whole install last night with windows loader trying to activate)  and I dont have a lot of time to mess around with hacks and work arounds so it might be the time to look at some genuine software  :'( boo

So what are people upto? I can go to maplin and get Windows8 for £80 or apparently there are some bargain win7 deals out in thehigh street supermarkets. Or I can get win7 ultimate of the net for £180 ish.

P.s. not into Linux

Ubuntu (The LTS versions) but now I think xubuntu is nice I installed it on an older dell with single kernel centrino for a friend and it was really nice I did it because ubuntu uses a pae kernel and cannot be installed on a machine that cannot handle pae. Otherwise a legal windows 7 is ok but I do not use it, a linux distro takes less space has nice and fast updates (even with options to update while installing, just mark the box and have an internet connection).

Use a virtual machine with a light version of windows to play games on or dual boot, install a minimal version of windows and then a linux distro, many gives the option to put windows alongside at install.

I'm still using Windows 7 (illegitimate edition) and I have a UEFI bios, whats the issue its causing? I had no problems whatsoever installing, it worked a charm.

If I were you I certainly wouldn't bother with Windows 8 without trying it extensively first, as I'm of the firm belief that's it's crippled for desktops.

I installed win7 ultimate sp1 as per usual aquired from popular pirateship based site. Used windows loader 2.2 by Daz to activate it like I have many times but on reboot the bootmgr is missing. Reading up it is because it doesnt work with uefi bios'.

Win7, legit, it's just not worth the hassle pirating anymore for the prices you can get with shopping around, I got windows 8 for £29.99 or whatever it was on offer, I might not even use it but at that price I can just stick it on any device when I fancy.

I had a legitimate Windows 7 that I bought when it was on pre-order special and the only reason I switched was because of their poxy artificial memory limitations. I would have purchased Windows 8 happily if it hadn't been a donkey.

Ubuntu. Now with Steam on Linux I can play pretty much all my games anyway. :/

Otherwise I do have a 90 day trial version of win 7 enterprise.

also this is so true.

I spank £80 on takeaways in a month. So £80 on something that will last me a few years is a no brainer. Makes no sense to pirate, too much risk and not enough gain.
