Title: What is my main bottleneck ?
Post by: brun on November 30, 2006, 21:52:58 PM
firstly, hi guys !..........long time no see !

right, ive not been playing any games for years and i want to have a go again but is my system up to it

currently

XP
756Mb DDR
AMD Sempron 2600+ Socket A
GeForce FX 5700LE 128Mb

i do realise this is hardly a top of the range system but an upgrade was done in a rush and on the tightest of budgets about a year ago

ive not actually tried to run any current games yet but i can see me having problems

in your opinion if i was to upgrade one area of my system what would it be ?

my guess is the mobo cos the of the socket A, or maybe i can get a cheap processor that will fit it, as ive only got a Sempron its not even a proper Athlon

RAID the drives and add more RAM if you are on a budget.  Cheap ITE8212 is about Ã,£10, drives cost ~Ã,£50 for 2 and the memory will cost about Ã,£30 for an extra 512.

^^^

what he said.

tho try some games first, my nephew uses my old system when he comes over and we play network games, 2200xp, crap on-bord gfx, and a gig of ddr.... so far the only game it wont run is that new lego one :)

It isnt too shabby a machine, best up it to 1GB ram though. Really to improve much on what you have its probably going to be worth waiting until you have enough dosh for a new system unit beyond that. If you replace your mobo then its best to upgrade the ram, CPU and graphics card to newer versions too.

Ive been using a 2500+ barton for the last couple of years and it handles most things at least adequately. The only game that stretches it excessively is C&C Generals which overdoes the processor and can stall the game repeatedly, often each stall taking several seconds.

Well, hello brun.  :-)

Id go for the traditional RAM upgrade first of all, cheap and easy to do.

thats interesting cause C&C generals has never caused any trouble on my duallie DLT3C Tbred setup at 1900+. I dont think its multithreaded is it?

Nope, the missions work without any problem, its playing against 3 or more computer opponents that causes problems on some maps. Dont know why.

thats interesting, perhaps Ive just never played against enough compy opponents on the requisite maps. I rarely play the missions, I find scirmish mode much more fun.

looks like Im having problems too, scirmish is a bad spelling even by my standards lol

perhaps youre just better at it than me and the computer gets bolshy cause it cant beat you fair and square. I always used to find Dune 2 crashed my poor old 286 more often if I was winning at the time.

i want to play ghost recon

ive played a demo of battlefield 2142 and that runs perfect but the demo of ghost recon hardly runs at all

is my graphics card in need of an upgrade as ghost recon says you need a GeForce 6/7

ghost recon probably needs a SM2.0 compatible card if thats the case.

battlefield 2142 is just a revamped bf2 engine so it wont be so fussy about hardware (apart from needing lots of it   )
