Played this for 2 months back in 2004 with Dooms - cancelled due to realising how much time it required and I just didnt and dont have that kind of free time. Seems like it died off though - havent heard it mentioned for years. Quite enjoyed what little I played of it - thought it had a lot of potential.

Dooms - did you continue to play for long after I quit?

Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Sony tried to balance it by taking the scissors away, so you was left with just rock & paper.

Then they took the rock away & decided to let anyone who wanted to be a Jedi, to be a Jedi.

Pitty they f**ked up. The crafting side of the game is the best ive seen in any MMORPG.
No mob drops or boss loot will be better than anything crafted.

+ you had your own house, player cities, etc. Lot of ground breaking stuff in MMORPG,
sony just didnt know how to handle the fanboys, gave them what they wanted & broke the game.

The combat upgrade, as good as it was, killed off some subscribers (fortunately the leet template stacking crowd who want an "I Win" button). After a few months with the Combat upgrade subscriber numbers hit an all time high; the game was in its best state ever after the combat upgrade pass. Then, however, SOE decided to roll out the "NGE" (new game enhancements) which pretty much killed things off for good.

If you google for "new game enhancements" or "NGE" youll find a million and one articles about it however the gist of the whole thing was they removed the skilltree and changed it to nine "iconic, starwarsy(tm)" professions, including letting you pick jedi from the start and killing off popular professions for good. They also changed the game combat system so it was twitch based, and slimmed down the specials so you only have a very small choice as to different playstyles. Basically they changed the entire game from the ground up and pushed it out relatively unannounced.

I really loved SWG when i first started playing it, I was paying for 3 accounts at 1 stage lol

IMO the biggest mistake they made with it was having Jedis as playable characters, if they had just left it with the original classes, rather than giving in to the kids screaming "I want a Jedi!!!" and built content around that, the game would have lasted a lot longer and been better for it, I didnt want to be a Jedi and I know a lot of my friends didnt start to play the game to be one.

I got bored though due to lack of things to do in the end, I was in the game for PVE mainly and as said the crafting and having your own house were great, but that didnt make up for the lack of high end PVE content to me, I could solo near enough anything in game which was really a big mistake they should have picked up on that far sooner.

Really was a shame they screwed it up because the concept of the game at the start really excited me and was the best I had seen back then or since, WoW is a far better game tbh but it never got my blood pumping like SWG did at times.

If only WoW had the crafting that SWG had, or SWG had the battlegrounds & Instances that WoW has.

Biggest gripe about WoW is its crafting & lack of it. 2 in 3 warlocks, mages & Priests are Tailors, because they have to be to wear FrozenShadoweave.
Those who arent, are either into T6 & will prob. have to re-learn Tailoring when the new addon comes out - as I bet my left nut therell be recipes req. Tailoring to wear the item
or they havent grasped that theres Tailoring stuff on par with T4/T5 stuff & its not all about Badges & instance drops.

The only problem with WoW is the people who play WoW. Ive tried to get into it so many times but just cant cope with the community. Sure, EQII and SWG had their fair share of asshats but WoW just seems to have far more than any other MMO.

Bacon

Add Age of Conan to the list of Asshat communities..

Miss Swg was a great game before they messed it up, nothing like going out on the Bounty Hunter looking for Bounties :D

And visiting all the Player shops in their houses and businesses :D

I spent weeks and weeks just flying around different player cities, buying stuff off their merchants, oh i miss those days :D

I loved Galaxies so much when it came out, played it till patch 7? (just before they added hair salons outside cantinas).

The crafting system was so awesome and the differences in weapon qualitys so everything was different for everyone, it was complex but it was worth learning!

Only MMO Ive ever played that you could happily spend all your time in the game playing a non-combat player.

The class system was something new aswell, why choose a class and stick to it? The ability to wack points where you wanted to make your own uber / hybrid / all over the shop class was great.

I tried it a few months ago and wanted to cry, its just the same as every other mmo now. Pick a class, max its level, everyone using same weapons and skills :(

I cant remember what patch we were on when i started playing SWG, i think it was around Feb 05 and i carried on until the NGE first hit when i quit for 3 months.

I went back for a few months and just became bored with it.

Feb05 was post CU if i remember, was still worthy of playing then, was right after Jump to Lightspeed, you might have even got that as the bundle, SWG and JTL, think it came with a Special Speeder bike :D

I played for a while and loved it, remember the auto-macro scripts to get master on weapons stupidly quickly! :)
