Quote from: ShaunIt was well before then dude, SWG came out on 7/10/03  the game hadn't been out that long when I started playing (3 or 4 month's) and you started before me.

I remember because you give me some credits to buy a speeder :)

Wow was it really that long ago? I was playing for alot longer than I thought :P I got a couple days before release (was working at Gamestation at the time, Rivkid can tell you how excited I was) and stopped playing soon after JTL came out

If it came out 10/03 and me and you def got it 2/3 days pre release how come my statements were for jan/feb 04? Confused!!
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Eggtastico

the release date was June 2003 (US) & the UK/Europe release was about 3months later & the first Jedi 2months later (US)

Problem started with Perma Death, nobody would use their Jedi (they was very underpowered from the start, you affectively had zero skills & could only level
up on the over-populated starter worlds), then they took Perma-Death away & everyone cried to many jedi - that along with the Bounty Hunter bugs.

They should have made your character become a Jedi, instead of making you start from scratch.

Not sure about the new one either... Jedi was affectively the galaxy Police. Not sure how its going to work & may fall on the same sword that SWG fell on...
that being to many jedi

SWG I think had the bigger potential then even wow.
It had the concept, it had the lore it had a good game engine tbh and good concepts but it had a problem with the jedi as more unlocked it, it was a good concept but naturally had some flaws in how it work. Things like gear breaking was naff but the biggest problem is the developers were slow to do things, slow with content, did not have a clue in terms of content to offer like raiding etc and were terrable communicating and working with the comunity. Game breaking bugs were not fixed till the next months patch.
A lot of the content was generated by the players and the first true instance in my opinion which was the ship you went up on was just insanely bugged and never properly fixed. I mean you went up saw lots of corridors ran around like a nutter for a bit being shot by androids walking through walls and hitting you for insane damage.

KOTOR MMO is going to happen and because it will be set in a time where Jedi and Sith were around more and taking what they learnt from the RPGs and Lucasarts from what SOE did with SWG this has a massive potential.

I really hope they take what they know from KOTOR and Bioshock, What Makes Wow good in terms of raids etc and Take the good elements of SWG - I mean the space element they did add was very good for example and I think taking all the good from that and the others mentioned you have a very good game on your hands

You know its a shame that since SWG ive blacklisted SOE, vowing never to sign up for any SOE game ever again.

The bugs etc you can live with, the game was so much fun, even solo play as a Bounty Hunter was excellent, i loved it so much and the trading aspects, your never limited to products to sell /merchant on the auction and to other players, and houses and furniture i still get excited now thinking about how good it all was.

But SOE, they were just a nightmare, sorting issues seemed non existant, i remember you could have 3 of one specific type of mission, i had 2 bugged in my mission log which meant i could only pick one up at a time, i had to go back and forth, it soon became a bore and everytime i reported it i had the same response "we know this is an issue and are in the process of fixing it" i searched the forums, searched google it seems this had been a problem since time began...

And JTL, the space bit was great but that Wookie planet i forget the name it just ran like crap, low fps etc, all my guildies used to moan about it, it just seemed unplayable.

As such as always its all the little things that become one big thing and really annoy you.

And the forums eugh, hated that community, full of complete asshats, the flames i saw on those forums shocked me, i.e.

Bounty Hunter kills a Jedi (Jedi loses xp) Jedi posts on forums some made up story, flaming ensues, foul language, racial abuse, everything.. Until the thread was closed, kind of glad i never bother to post on those forums.

Brilliant, the rubberbanding on the bike part brings back memories.

10k for a 2.4k buff? What a rip off. :)

Anyone remember back when they first launched the game and all of the crap and rubbish that dropped off the map ended up at 0.0? It was the best place to hunt. MMOs arent the same without the TK knockdown/dizzy/unarmedhit3 spam.

When I compare it to Age of Conan it makes you realise how far MMOs have come.

I still dont see it, yeah the graphics are better, a lot more interest from not just the computer community. I still think that Ultima Online was brilliant back in the day, I will still always have a love for Dark Ages of Camelot, Im yet to find an MMORPG that I can truly stick at and not get bored or frustrated with.

I think a major part of this is trying to weigh up the lack of time I have compared to what I did years ago, tho this is soon to change, I will be trying out Warhammer and Conan, the other major thing I find is, I dont have a guild or a community to hang about with in game anymore.

Yep I agree with you up to a point, but the funny thing is there are still aspects of SWG that haven't been surpassed in any other MMO since :(

Reading this thread has made feel really nostalgic for the game Ice Ice Baby lol

Dam those stupid fools for screwing it up!!!

Serious

Game play matters a lot more than fancy graphics, some games just feel right, ahead of their time.

Cant watch the video at work but man this thread brings back great memories. Galaxies was the last game I can say I was addicted to (up till stupid hour, home and straight back on etc).

The rubberbanding was so annoying but it was just part of the game, same as all the spam soon as you entered the citys... "BUYING xx QUALITY yy AT 30,34!!!!!!!"

Oh and the stupid insane cost of buffs, which you had to have before going hunting.

I spent my whole time in the game poor, I would earn just enough to pay my rent... most of my gear was 2nd hand aswell. Then after I stopped playing for a few months i went back and got given some of the rewards (Anti-Decay Kit & Box of high quality resources) which I ended up selling for millions... shame every city/store I knew and had bookmarked didnt exist anymore :(

I was never poor for a long time, one guy I knew quit the game and left me everything. He had like 20 houses full of stuff and more mining stuff then you could not believe. I got sick of maintaining stuff. Once I think I stuck on 6 months worth on everything and ignored them all for 1 and the amount of resources I then sold was insane, lol.

Anyone remember the developers, they were crap and a common suggestion was that people would like to ride on the two seater speeders etc. They fully and out right said the game engine would not make it possible and kept saying it was not technically possible constantly.
Soon as the masses were playing wow all of a sudden out popped the feature apperently, lol.
Just another case of the developers not bothering to fix or do additions to the game un released absolutely forced too or could be bothered to, rubber banding was just a prime example, along with the 10 minute shuttle wait times down to 5.
I was around when all the protests hit and saw it on the server I was on because they banned all the people who did the hack to clone money but not only that anyone that had been tipped money from these guys wanted or not as well as anyone who made and sold items even through their shops where the money was used to pay for it all got banned. It was daft and the GM behavior was appalling.

Leon

I never had any experiance with the in game GMs they could not of exisited from what I saw / heard about them.

I remember the masssive banning streak tho, it was nuts and took alot of people weeks to get back online. As said above SOEs handling of SWG killed any faith I have in the company and I would be reluctant to pick up another game of theirs.

The easiest way to make money without doing anything, i used 1 or 2 plots for my house, cant remember exactly then rented out all the other spots to a guildie who dropped mines on all of them, it was money for nothing, 10 building slots per account and i was busy doing other stuff anyway :D The good thing is she was one of the finest double cap weapon crafters on the server, and sold me quite a few nice goodies for my BH :D
