Title: Whats Guild Wars like?
Post by: Serious on April 11, 2008, 02:57:25 AM
Especially for a first time MMORPG.

Just dont fancy shelling out each month for Warcraft.

Guild Wars started with Prophecies, then expanded to: Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North, EOTN is just like adding extensions on to the content rather than separate zones as such.

For a new mmoer its a great game, very easy to hit the level cap, you can do it in around 2 days pretty easily, or take your time and level at your own pace while you get used to the game.

Its pretty straight forward, point and click. You make a skill build of 8 different skills, you take a primary proffession and then a secondary, so for instance you could start with Warrior, choose some damage skills etc, and then have monk as your secondary so you can heal yourself or buff yourself.

I would advise reading some sites to get used to it namely:

http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

And later http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page when you settle in and want to try out different skill builds for Farming, PVP, PVE etc

The only problem is you can only play the standard prophecies zone and eye of the north addon with this pack: http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/3360355/Guild-Wars-Platinum-Edition/Product.html which is recommended to start your off as it has the original game and the new content, but many people will be playing the other expansions, namely Nightfall and Factions

I would suggest that Nightfall is the easiest one to hit lvl cap in, im only worrying in advance that levelling 1-20 in prophecies you might not find people around all the time to group up with for the Missions, which are like the dungeons for this game, although, see next notes:

As with games like Wow you have mostly non instanced zones where everyone can meet , quest etc and do as they please, then you have dungeons for group content.

For Guild Wars everything is instanced, so while your questing or doing missions you wont run into another person. Only the towns and outposts are non instanced which is basically where you look for groups.

The biggest problem for me, (i do own all the games/expansions) there is no Auction House , so all the stuff you loot either has to goto vendor , or you have to stand around in the towns like an idiot trying to sell it in the very cluttered chat channels which sometimes takes a while, or you can on the otherhand use an auction site outside of the game, where you list the phat loots and people who win pay you ingame money for them.

ugh ive lost where i was so ill stop, you ask questions :P

I play Guild Wars completely solo almost like a dungeon crawl hack n slash rather than an MMO, the massively multiplayer side of this particular game doesnt float my boat at all as it all seems vaguely pointless. Dont get me wrong, its still a great game, but it in no way shape or form compares to a "traditional" MMO, even one with lots of instancing like EQII.

Ill have a go with that and see if I like it, if I need to Ill ask questions later.

TBH Ive just been to the post office and drew some money out. I thought I was spending at an adequate level to keep the money down but I was up nearly £400 over what I had in the middle of February :/

Thanks for the advice ;)

Got a ranger/elementalist and an elementalist/Necromancer, the second is the most powerful so far.

Finding a getting started in town guide is a bit of a problem, theres information needed, but its spread all over the place. Not much in the manual though.

So I starts goung through from the initial area to the burned bit. Three real people joined me, going against the boss two of them bug out, that leaves me and a sort of fighter. We are both kicking butt but the others leaving at the same time means I have no easy external means of helth regen. I blasts it and it does the same back then we both die at the same moment :( The fighter managed to survive somehow so it went through.

Some people you just cant trust so Im going around with three bots ATM.

Whats your character name? I might try logging in and helping you, but the lag will probably be terrible (plus timezone issue).

Shame you didnt get this when the TekGuild was Active, we had some fun times. :)

edit: Baka! Japanese sentence structure...

Noppy Runs and Serious Runs are the two I have set up, did the first from a very old nickname meaning does nothing. The second is better. Im presently on getting the womans ashes back, except I get just over half way there (I think) and my party gets slaughtered. Will have to think about it a bit more.

If you abandon a mission can you restart it later?

Starting again from the beginning, yes. (Might not be correct since I havent done any missions for a long time now.)

Guild Wars Official Wiki answers loads of questions. :)

Some areas just arent fully thought out, you pick up a drop, and its worth 5 gold, use a kit on it and the product might only be worth three gold. Stupid TBVH.

Its very limited in respect to making things too.

hehe you say its your first MMO and then complain its not complex enough ;)

Might be worth moving onto to something else if thats the case. You can get 7/10 day trials for most MMOs these days, go a try and few and see what you like and then buy it.

WoW
EQ2
LotR:O
Lineage 2
City of Heroes / Vilians
Tabula Rasa

They are all popular still :)

edit: Oh but they are all monthly sub, but if you really enjoy it after a trial its worth it :)

and a couple more:
Eve Online
Pirates of the Burning Sea
Warhammer Online (soon)

Ive just learned what the green flag is for.

The gameplay is adequate, its just the trading thats an issue. Some making things profession options would be nice and a better way of upgrading things but otherwise its an adequate game. ATM Im selling the trash and processing it only when it says unidentified and then only if its highly recoverable. I have enough leather and cloth ATM so theres no point in doing the cheap stuff. Main thing is having played Oblivion I can see where this has some inadequacies.

I can see me shuffling off it after a few weeks and trying something else though.

ATM I could afford a sub, I dont smoke, hardly drink, dont have an expensive woman problem, or car, and all my drugs are supplied by the doctor. The main household bills are paid by my brother via DD so expense wise I am reasonabley well off.

I saw one female character offering I dance for cash. Looked pretty for a game chaeracter, then I thought about it, it could be a pensioner behind it, or even an old geezer couch potato. :gag:

Everyone looks the same in Guild Wars.

If youre in the market for an MMO hang fire for Age of Conan. Its definitely worth checking out, as is EVE Online if youre after complexity, although I must admit it wasnt my cup of tea. If you cant wait then Id recommend Everquest II, thats probably the most enjoyable and "fully featured" modern MMO. Warcraft is full of kids and idiots, Lord of the Rings Online is lacking in endgame content, Vanguard should be avoided at all costs as its incredibly bug-ridden,  Pirates of the Burning Sea has absolutely nothing to do other than PvP and run repetitive missions, and City of Heroes/Villains are great fun but very much an MMO-lite to drop into every now and again.

Not doing too bad, have about 15K in gold and about twenty dyes in my account chest, including a black one. Lots of other stuff too.

I joined a guild after being invited but the two officers hadnt been active in over a year, gave that a few days and decided to leave, I was better off on my own.

Tried warrior/monk but didnt like so deleted.

Also tried Warrior/ranger, better but, I dont know.

Next up is going to be a warrior/elementalist.

Couple of questions

I want some better armor than offered by the traders in pre-searing, I prefer it to after, but there doesnt seem to be any crafter?

Anyone tell me a good external auction site for the goods?

I would agree that a proper in house auction place would be nice.
Title: Re:Whats Guild Wars like?
Post by: skidzilla on May 16, 2008, 05:41:53 AM
http://guildwarsguru.com/ have auctions, pretty knowledgeable community too.
Title: Re:Whats Guild Wars like?
Post by: Bacon on May 16, 2008, 10:41:52 AM
You dont need any external auctions site for materials you can gather them yourself or purchase them from other players ingame.

The armor you need is max armor, it can be bought from a number of places in prophecies, if you let me know how far you have got in the game i can point out the nearest location for you.

Failing that get yourself to Droknars forge, thats definately max armor :D

However to get to Droks is basically right through the game, when you have completed the desert missions and defeated your doppleganger it will put you in droks, but if you get to Beacons Perch, you can purchase a runner to take a more direct route. Anyway ill explain this when i know where you are :P

Its not that, Ive found armor after the searing easily enough. Its in the pre-searing game where I perfer to reside most of the time, its also a very good area for farming dyes and Hunters ales. Most of the time I just go out and massacre spiders and a few level 3 bears or go against stone elementals.

Sold a black, pre-searing, for 7K. Bit cheaper than the post searing price but the person put up a WTB and it saved me a lot of time trying to sell it. I also sold six ales to a single person for 540 - all clear profit.

You can do an in game search for a buyer but it still could be better set up.

Pre Searing is a whole separate community btw, many people going for Legendary Defender of Ascalon or Survivor title.

You can get upto level 20 in Pre Searing :) , i have a level 14 Warrior/Ranger :)

Many people have characters called Perma-Pres, Permant Pre Searing characters, its like the hip place to be, if you visit the American districts you will see
people with 1,2,3 characters logged in on separate accounts.

Pre Searing is big business from the trading perspective. I.e. Birthday present which turn into minipets, and rare Purple weapons that drop from the Charr in the North sell for top money in Pre, the same prices that really rare stuff sells for in post searing.

Also you can easily farm materials in Pre, and sell them to people who will Mule a character to Post.

If you want to stay in pre i suggest levelling a character up for Charr farming, the drops can soon rack up your bank account, the only salvage kit in Pre drops from the charr, its 5 use and sells for 5k a kit, which is spot on money for a new character :D

Anyway check this site: http://www.presearing.com/

Basically you can only get the standard armor or collector armor, collector armor is basically find 5 gargoyle skulls and hand it into a collector for a piece of armor.

Collectors with a Map here: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Armor_collectors_(Ascalon_Pre-Searing)

And also familiarise yourself with the Pre-Searing guide for a lot of info: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Pre-Searing_guide

Title: Re:Whats Guild Wars like?
Post by: Serious on May 18, 2008, 18:17:43 PM
I picked up a load of the birthday cupcakes and stored them in the storage box, just in case. Then I noticed someone selling them for 500 each? I have C 49 of them...

thought it with the armour, and Ive been over the wall a few times so Im loaded with purple goodies. I retreved a charr bag and used it before I realised it was worth about 1K a use...

Still that means I have some useful insignias fitted.

Not going for survivor or defender, dont see the point in death levelling TBVH. I just like the area more than after.

Ive a warrior/necromancer up to 12 and half way to 13 in pre-searing, an Elementalist/ranger at level 9. Just killed off a level 15 in post searing to free up a slot.

Ive also seen a warrior in all black armour, either they are damn lucky or spend a lot of time playing to achieve that. Dye for boots, gauntlets, helment and two seperate bits of body armour costs 37,500 gold...

Thanks for the advice ;)

Someone put up a new Guild insignia, so I complained that I liked the old one and the new one was crap.

The one who did it told me to shut up, I didnt and kept on complaining.

They complained back and, with help of several others, got the Guildmaster to kicked me :w00t:

I didnt want to be with a load of Nazi boot meisters with an awful insignia, Im better off without them. Managed to call them all a bunch of losers three times before I was despatched out the door

Check American English District 1, look out for T I T A N, he has 3 warriors on different accounts all in black.

The reason they are so rich, is a few patches back there was an exploit where it was possible to take your Pre- Char to guild hall and trade goods,
it was only for one patch, where it bugged cus its not supposed to be possible for obvious reasons.

Now some of those in pre-searing that caught onto it and stupidly well off, bring in goods from Post and selling them for silly amounts of money, Pre-searing
is actually a haven for trading, and has its own black market going on :P

If you want a guild i can hook you up when i come online, providing you meet the criteria, again ill ask a question or 2 when your on, dont hang around though for an invite cus come friday ill be inactive in guild wars i only play it when im between games.
Title: Re:Whats Guild Wars like?
Post by: Serious on May 21, 2008, 11:41:50 AM
Theres plenty of active guilds in pre-searing, got sorted with a new one the next day.

I have an elemental/ranger that will be going through shortly, didnt want a strider/moa, or a cat/wolf/bear. I tried the rabbit but it wasnt an animal according to the system. Then I went north of the wall and found a wild boar, so Im going around with some bacon anyway :D

Theres several peeps offering to swap pre-searing cash for post, is this a scam or a real offer?

Then some are offering to buy Charr carvings in pre-searing for 12, four times the merchants offer, WHY?

Is that bug still around? I would have expected them to fix it quick and make it compulsory. I know theres peeps with multiple accounts who seem to just trade.

IF you go inactive after a period of time surely its worth signing in every week or so?
Title: Re:Whats Guild Wars like?
Post by: Bacon on May 21, 2008, 13:34:03 PM
Pre-Searing is a locked area, no trades in or out to/from post. Thus the exploit opened up a whole new market, and once found out by the devs
it was shut down, i dont know if people report them fast or the devs are slow with the content/patch updates but they dont seem to fix problems as quick as Blizzard.

If you want to trade Plats with someone, make to find someone on Presearing forums that has a good reputation, because they will expect you to trade your post
plats first for their presearing plats or vice versa, usually there is also a conversion rate of 1:1.5, when trading plats or purchasing pre-items for post cash.

Charr carvings ,never, ever merchant them, always check wiki when you find items like this, if your unsure if an item is worth something to someone then always check wiki. Carvings can be handed in during special events for alcohol, sweets, party items etc, all these items in quantity can contribute to various title tracks and as such are worth money :P (Charr Carvings 10-20g, if you sell a stack of 250 generally the buyer will pay more, if you watch the trade channels you will see their prices for single, stacks)

What you need to remember is people have been playing this game for 3 years also, so people tend to do everything they can in the normal game, then some people will then roll a char in Presearing and just play that, its easy to farm for stuff in pre, i.e.

Dyes - Black 5k , White 3k, Others 50-300g each - Dyes drops more often, because the loot tables in pre are more limited.
Charr Carvings - 10-20g each
Charr Bags - 800g - 1k each
Char Salvage Kits - 5k each

Runes & Insignias - Unsalvaged 250g > Salvage 500g > some of the salvaged runes are worth 1.5-2k, vigor is worth like 5.5k salvaged or something.

Purple Weapons, Shields etc - 50g - 100,000g + X/XX/XXX Ectos (1 x Ecto = 5k) Really there is no end to the value of an item, dependent purely on stats and the willingness of the buyer, how bad he needs it, get 2 or 3 bidders and you will an instant rich man, advertise the rarer stuff on presearing forums and ingame, get the most out of the trade.

Special Events
During these events you can farm xx items and trade for sweets , alcohol, cupcakes, party items etc, you can either use these for your own title, or as i do, farm your ass off, get as many as you can and store them on a separate character (known as a mule or bank alt), then when the market is high sell them off.

Mini Pets
Every 1 character you have thats 1 year old/er will get you a new Birthday Present, every Present is a mini-pet, chosen at random, 1st year mini-pets sell for the least while 3rd selling for the highest, imo create as many characters as you can even if you dont play them you will still get birthday presents, if these characters are in presearing those birthday presents will sell at inflated prices, you can either sell in unopened present form or extract the pet and sell that.

I generally check dye prices daily on the post market by clicking a trader, Ive found that spiders seem to drop a lot more black than some others. Ive had five of them. Only sold one - for 7K ;) Sold three blues for 600, decided to let them have one free.

Ive been farming Hunters Ales and picking up dyes regularly at the same time, been selling the charr carvings for 12 each. TBH trading on this game has a strong learning curve, I bet a load of noobs sell dye to the trader for 1g and then kick themselves rotten when they find out what its actually worth.

Have 3 characters in pre-searing and one post ATM, Ive been doing so much and then transporting the money through.

Basically Ive filled my aims in playing this already, Over 20K in the chest and Ive got two mini-pets on different characters too, one pre-searing.

Thanks for the info on the carvings, guess one of my characters is going to keep theirs. Ive bought charr bags for 800 and I sell them for 900 when Im finished with them ;)

Going for survivor with a ranger/necromancer - means that one will have to go post searing.

Unfortunately mu connection has much in common with a lady of negotiable virtues undergarment...

You been on guildwarsguru.com forums yet? Some nice Price Guides for rare minipets, Weapons, Shields etc, its always worth seeing which items are worth the most before you start questing in the higher lvl areas just incase something nice drops, you dont want to undersell it :P

Im still spending a lot of my time in pre-searing, ATM three of my four characters are there. Although its smaller for farming its much better, I can make quite a nice amount of money relatively quickly. The business atmosphere is also much better as there is only one main area where transactions take place, Ascalon, although I regularly go to the American one to see if I can buy something cheap or flog something for a profit.

ATM I am considering buying Guildwars 2 when it comes out, or I might buy a second licence so I can swap stuff between characters. Not having any storage in presearing is a bummer.

For the first time since I bought this game I cant get on the server....

Been very lucky with drops though, a total of nine black dyes and several whites along with a good few charr bags in pre-searing. The charr bags should be rare in order to keep the price up but they are getting far too common now. Been promoted in my guild to officer and have been made an admin on the Guilds forums, alhough its a lot smaller than this place as yet.

[edit] Ten blacks now...

Twelve blacks.

Ive just created my own guild, standing at a total of membership of three and one guest.

Next month there is going to be a new pack with all four parts in it, pre-order £25 from play.
