Big name bands like The Black Keys (http://www.grimeys.com/photos_blackkeys.html) often stop by before shows for free mini-concerts. On Fridays every customer at a random time, gets a free beer to drink while browsing. :ptu: Oh, and they sell LPs as well. Everything from Funkadelic to Tammy Wynette. When I bought a Bill Anderson classic country record a while back, the tattooed and pierced dude behind the counter deemed it "cool". No mopers here. Best indie record shop in the world. :D
did i tell you recently that i hate you?

But I totally missed the Black Keys show. Forgot to put it on my calendar.
Its funny, all these record shops have been "forced" to close as people download stuff and stores like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy get bigger CD sections. How does Grimeys survive? By actually catering to the public. Stocking rare stuff, new and used vinyl, and having a staff thats far more interested in cool music than showing you an attitude. Good prices as well, I got a Kinks 2LP compilation in the shrink wrap for $5.
The other indie record shop in town that also does new, used, and vinyl is also doing great.
you gotta offer something you cant get anywhere else.
the experience of trawling through boxes of vinyl.
Indeed, nothing beats pouring through vinyl boxes and digging out rare nuggets of music. Sounds like a very good shop. I dont know many good indies still going these days. I had an awesome one that used to supply me ltd ed. vinyl pressings (sub 1000 copy stuff) direct from EMI, long gone are those days though. :(
If those guys were still about Id have my 180g virgin Stadium Arcadium vinyls by now.
Price: Ã,£40.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stadium-Arcadium-VINYL-Chili-Peppers/dp/B000GW8OX2)
:drama:
Gotta sound better than the CD version as its a totally different mix down. No clipping I hope. (http://www.physik.uni-kiel.de/~stu50460/dani/)
:wtf:
Nah, take a look over at Hoffmans forums who did the mastering, this album is being revered for how amazing it sounds.
No clipping, even on the 150g it seems (scrolly down a bit) http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=94927&page=5&highlight=chili+peppers
Im pretty peed off actually. US & Canadians are busy enjoying it while Warner F about everyone this side of the pond. Ive even put in a preoroder on Amazon for the 180g in case Diversevinyl dont pull through (which after my dull conversation with them sadly seems likely). I really want this set!

:o
For those not aware the top waveform is the dynamics of Stadium Arcadium from LP, the bottom waveform is from CD.
That is the reason vinyl is still around. Put decent analogue to analogue mastering down and the CD will pale in comparison.
CD has more dynamic range, but the guys that master vinyl do a nicer job despite limitations. Whoever in this town that did a Lucinda Williams record I own deserves a gold medal. Its recorded live in an old house with blankets on the wall, and he squeezes every bit of dynamic that that piece o wax can hold. :D
A little further edumacation for people on poor modern [usually CD] mastering:
The Loudness War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmex_4hreQ)
gah clipping does my head in. records which have decided to be mastered by a goon need to be repeatedly stamped on till they are dead.
i was referring to the new muse cd as well :/
Yup, I did two or three listens of the new RHCP album and it wore out my patience. Theyve had bad mixes the past three albums. :/ Not a reflection on the band, but it makes it unbearable to have a loud critical listen on good monitors, as its like a listening to a really drunk arrogant guy brag about his this or that in a loud bar. LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA!
GAZOOTS!!!
take that record back imo. if you cant enjoy, not worth the crap its printed on!
I believe my local record store is the coolest.
If Spillers Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spillers_Records) means anything to anyone youll know what I mean :)
...Probably the oldest record store in the world. :)
Ha! Ive been trrrrumped! Mad props given.
I heard a documentary about "the oldest record shop" on NPR today and didnt catch the name, it may have been yours, Rich. The owner sounded like an amazingly interesting man.
Nottinghams Entry.

Something that is unfortunately getting more typical. Especially with the major labels, IE warner.

Not only done on remastered CDs many Radio stations playing them also add "loudness" !!!
Its about time we had more bands putting their music out on SACD and DVD-A :(

It would be nice, but even mastering done on those can be quite poor at times and most people really arnt bothered about quality audio sadly, theres just not enough market for it.
gah
5.1 dts or vinyl imo.
