The Father in law has bought an LG 22LH2000 LCD TV and was asking me about the USB port on the back.

I told him initially that I thought it would be for service use, as it wasnt documented in the manual.

Hunting around the internet, turns up a hack that involves downgrading the firmware in the TV (using the usb) to an earlier version.  Entering the service menu and enable the USB port.

So I followed the instructions, and now this little bedroom TV plays MP3s, AVIs, JPGs, and MKVs.

I want one now, but a larger one

Isnt that only HD Ready. Only does 720P?

Dont see what thats got to do with the price of fish, seeing as its a small TV for a bedroom.

Can do the same mod on any LG TV with a USB port.

If its a firmware downgrade, do you lose any other features?

Ive got a lan drive that has a usb port too... would be nice if that would work with it....

Some model of the samsung screens also come with this. The one I played with played all my AVI files fine straight from USB.

Ill be buying one of the £50 WD things to do the job on the TV we have downstairs.

It accepts the signal but only is HD Ready and outputs only at 720, it will downscale, Guy in that forum is one similar to one I read for someone else not to long ago.

You can get full HD tvs for just as good prices these days. The USB thing is cool though.

Its a bloody 22" screen, you couldnt tell the difference between 720p and 1080p if you printed the words "THIS IS HIGHER, THAN HIGH DEFINITION" on the playback material every time it was, in fact, 1080p.

Now, I reckon Id be hard pressed to tell the difference on my 42" TV in the front room. Mainly because Im not gonna stick my nose against the screen to watch individual pixels and measure the difference between both resolutions. I dont have the awareness of Velma Dinkley (of Scooby Doo fame) admittedly, but I reckon even with her attention to detail shed be hard pressed to notice a difference between 720p and 1080p on a 22" screen.

Who gives a hairy sh*t that you dont think the TV doesnt output at 1080p.  LG think it does..  Its a hack that works on all LG TVs with USB. This particular one is a 22".  Who cares if the TV in the bedroom (attached to an SD DVR) doesnt allegedly show 1080p.

They say the smallest size where you can start to (maybe) see the distance is at 32" - probably at closer than the recommended viewing distance too Ill wager. On a 22" screen from the end of your bed 6 away no one would be able to tell the difference.

This laptop has a 16 1080p screen, and its noticeably better than my old one - which wasnt!

Might be because it has that RGB LED gubbins.

Just pointed out a bit of info in case that matters because someone I know bought it thinking it was full HD.
