I've just installed Windows 7, and everything seems fine except it won't recognise my usb wireless dongle.

I have tried two different usb devices, a Netgear one which I have the driver CD for, although its really old so the drivers will be out of date.....and I can't actually remember if it actually works, as I don't know where it came from  ::)
The other is a Belkin one, which I downloaded the drivers for, and it said it was compatible with windows 7. I just keep getting errors saying it's not working/recognised.

The USB ports are working as my keyboard/mouse are working, and an external hard drive is ok too.

Any ideas?  :-[

Any other puter you can try it out on ?

You might be able to let windows update find drivers for them, go to device mananger and find the entries for the devices, go to properties and choose Update driver, make sure it also does a search from internet. You might get lucky and find it will connect with them.

Do you have a model number on either of them?

chrisdicko

They work on my old PC fine. Clock'd, I can't search the internet for drivers really, as I connect wireless via the usb dongle....which isn't working :)

The Belkin details are:
Wireless G Plus Mimo USB Network Adaptor
Ver: 3001uk
FCC ID: K7SF5D9050B
SN: 150636U9309419

I downloaded the driver from here (3xxx driver) http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/297/~/f5d7050-wireless-g-usb-network-adapter---drivers

Actually, I just noticed on the USB adaptor, there is a small LED which flashes, but I don't think it did flash on the new PC? Although the USB ports on the new PC must work as my wireless keyb/mouse and external HD work via USB.

Wrong driver, look at your FCC ID :)

You need this one I believe:

The vista drivers might work if you're lucky

chrisdicko

oh balls, I just looked at the beginning and end letters/numbers.

I will give them a go when I get home, thanks :)

chrisdicko

No go still :( It still says it's unrecognised :(

Any more ideas?

Thanks :)

I had no end of troubles with 3G dongles when I did the Windows 7 upgrade at my last company, maybe the wifi dongle has similar issues? It came down to either finding a firmware update for the dongle or throwing them out :(

Is there a proven, decent wifi dongle which will 100% work in Win7?

Ordered a wireless PCI card, as it was annoying me too much.

Seems looking in google that it is a common problem :(   this was the best answer I found "try all USB ports and wait for it to install it self"  :)

maybe this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/TRIXES-Wireless-Internet-Adaptor-150Mbps/dp/B00504TTEE/ref=pd_sim_ce_2/275-6779073-4130621

hehe. Thanks for the help though Bear :)

I did try this guide. It looked as though it was working, as it lit the little LED on the dongle (it didn't light before)......still didn't work, but was worth a try.

Serious

For anyone who needs I got a pair of these a few months back. Installed Windows 7, plugged it in and it was recognised and working before I got the driver disk inserted. 7dayshop seems a good place if you need a wi-fi dongle.

I heard that if you do not have a genuine windows 7 the USB starts to give more trouble.
