if youve got a software based firewall on the computers then that might be blocking your local area connections. try looking for settings in your firewall that allows local area (LAN) connections.

try pinging each of the computers on your LAN to make sure your computer can reach them, you will need the computers IP address or computer name that you want to ping (N.B. some firewalls prevent responses from pings, e.g. windows built in SP2 firewall) so you may want to turn them off when your trying to ping them.

make sure file sharing is enabled on the computers you want to connect to, windows is sometimes funny in that it doesnt show any computers in the network places/ view workgroup computers; if the computer is not sharing any files.

also sometimes it takes windows awhile for them to come up, you could try connecting the other way round, e.g. connect from the computer you wanted to originally connect to (if u know what i mean) ;)

if they are all connected through wireless make sure there is no wireless isolation option.  If there is turn it off.

I find addint the IPX/SPX network proticol thing oftern helps.... netbuie too (tho i think xp auto adds it when you add ipx/spx)

IPX/SPX = defunct, and NetBeui is a broadcast bastard. Though fine on teeny tiny networks its slow as buggery on larger ones.

And if you have NetBios then both of the above just do the same as netbios anyway and there is no real point of installing them unless you have Windows 98 or 95 machines.

Oh... and none of them will help with regards to pinging IPs over the network :) They will help with file sharing though :)

both of those ar erather handy if you are using legacy systems on the network, but if you are using 2k or later then no point, TCP/IP protocols are integrated rather than being bolted on afterwards
