To cut a long story short I needed to print 10 pages of text for a friend of mine, fine I thought, ill use my new Epson Inkjet printer which I had bought only a few months previously. So I set it to use black Ink only, not wanting to waste any colour Ink and off it goes.
Two pages in it says I'm out of black ink, fine I thought, looks like I'll have to use the colour ink after all, no you bloody won't it said, buy a new black ink cartridge now or I'll print sod all. Yep that's right my frigging printer is holding me to ransom, unless I buy a new black ink cartridge it will refuse to print anything even though my colour cartridges are nearly full.
To say I was a little pissed off was a big understatement, how can they get away with this? I mean I have three near full colour cartridges, yet because my black cartridge is out it is refusing to print, what happened to using the colour inks to make a composite black? Epson are basically forcing customers to buy Ink to keep using their printer, even when there is no need.
Seriously if I had known about this before hand I would never have bought the bloody thing.
yup - have this issue with my old R300 photo. Run out of yellow? No black text printing for you Mr Rivkid......
Terrible design feature. I just keep a stock of cheapo carts now.
Lasers are too cheap to bother with inkjets these das.
:stupid:
One can get a b/w wifi laser for £100 so why bother with ink which dries up or have above mentioned problem ? they practically give away ink jet printer so they can sell ink, sorta like mobile phones for next to nothing so they can make money on yer calls.
Way less than that. Like 50 quid now for a Samsung workhorse.
lol you are right but personally Ive had my epson for 6 years and its perfectly good enough so not changing it, b) arent lasers still sh*t for photo printing?
Got a HP photo printer downstairs that is used once in a blue moon. Its one of the each colour is separate printers so if you run out of yellow just replace the yellow instead of the whole colour cart :)
Same, I love my canon, it also has 2 different black inks, one for text type stuff and another for the photos.
Lets you print even when the cartridge is supposedly empty too.
Using refils and the ink is actually almost free if you use staples £1 per empty cartridge deal, considering a pack of 4 inks costs about £6 I think, less if you buy more.

Yeah my epson is like that - but if the one colour runs out the others wont work until the empty one is replaced. Yuo dont have to replace them all though!
i got a hp 4200
had it for a few years & still on the 1st toner.
I got a spare toner ready for it when it plops.

Only 30-odd quid and still only half-used after 18 months. Search eBay (CIS inkjet) for inkjet longevity goodness.

was £120 a couple of years ago !
changed the cartridges once so far.... only thing is... I didnt know you were supposed to replace the waste toner tank things when theyre full... so Ive been emptying them instead.... dunno how much they are, but don;t care, emptying is it fine :)

OMG thats awesome! and thats ym printer too!!!
Ebay you say.....
how exactly does that CIS thing work then?
Quote from: Eddhow exactly does that CIS thing work then?
Plug in, print.
Seriously, the one I bought came pretty much pre-assembled. You just take out your old carts, plug in the new bank, charge ink and away you go.
:)
how does it work? is it just like a seperate piece of equipment that you plug in and can use cheapass ink cartridges?
Quote from: Rivkidb) arent lasers still sh*t for photo printing?
I have had both colour and B&W laser printers for quite a while, picture performance is reasonable on mine (a Minolta). I would say though that going mono laser with a colour inkjet might be preferable.

No, its 6/8 (depending on your model) reservoirs of ink which feed a block of cartridges. The block (which is effectively six/eight carts molded together) just clips-in where your expensive single carts would.
:)
For the cartridges that have chips, dont the CIS systems have chips that auto reset every time they power off or something too?
Yup, the CIS system pwn all OEMs.
they look pretty cool and useful. If I actually used my printer more than twice a year I might look into getting one :P
^ Same here, but I always find that the OEM carts are dry as a bone when i go to use them - these dont dry up easily. :)

thats what Im doing. Sammy ML1500 laser (£50 printer, £10 refills on 3000 sheet carts, printing is basically as cheap as paper with this thing) for B&W, HP Photosmart inkjet for colour. Working well so far, both printers are as happy under Linux as they are under Windows and just keep churning out the printed goodness.
TBH though for really good (ie wall hanging) photo prints youre better off with someone like
http://www.snapmad.com/browserTest.php anyway. I only really use my inkjet if I need prints in a hurry or want to proof print something.

It still is that much. That is single handedly the worst Laser Colour I have come accross. The worst parting being the seperate waste hopper that filled up and you cant wash out because of the laser that stop you from printing when it gets full. I had 3 clients send them back. Never sold them again.
HP 2600 laser jets are awfull also, expensive to run, break down.
If I want a midrange Laser Color I would go for either a Brother which are getting better and better or an Oki 52xx 58xx.
Rumour is in the trade HP are going to pull out of domestic all in one printers and focus on Business products.

See I never print because inks expensive and/or its dried up through lack of use. Get this and print a lot - awesome!

ahhh, but youre not supposed to empty them... youre supposed to chuck em away and get a new one ?
I always just empty mine, and I had the same problem because I was re-using it - the laser fill level thing.... easy fixed with a bit of toilet roll... reach it inside and clean the bit the laser looks through ;)
tbh, I only bought it because is has a build in duplexer, which is something i waned ever since i was a little kid !
