maximusotter

was the winning word for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Lame. Much too easy and phonetic.

Its an English word, but certainly borrowed from German.

There seems to be quite a few foreign words scattered throughout the Bee, I have to say they set the standards pretty high. I consider myself pretty hot on spelling yet Id have to rack my brain for some of those words in the later rounds.

Some of the later rounds appear quite easy given the phonetics involved, though.

In those sort of things the contestants should have to input the word into a computer or write it down and all of them should get the same words.

maxi, I doubt if many people have heard of it, let alone used it in conversation. Its not the sort of word you would use regularly. I do see the point that if a word is spelt phonetically then it shouldnt be used as its too easy though.
