I dunno most places dont let you wear bike helmets etc for security reasons...

but apart from that i agree, let them where what they want, I disagree with schools forcing kids not to wear veils, infact i disagree with uniforms in general.

The same rules should apply as do for any other item of clothing.

Its not as simple as that though, in our culture its polite to take your hat off in a place of business. In theirs, its polite to keep your face hidden.

I said yes...... but only in certain situations....

for example.... the TA that is up for being sacked by her school for not removing it in class, thats valid as far as im concerned..... a lot of SEN kids need to be able to read your facial features, thats how they understand the meaning of what your talking about.

Her counter argument was Im not allowed to show my face in the presence of men, which, according to the Koran.... is bollocks! It does state women should dress modestly which MOST muslims take as being a long skirt  item, and a long sleeve, high neck top.

Im sure the women love keeping hooded up in the height of summer...

TBH its cultural codswallop. The sooner that aspect of their culture dies off the better IMO.

it has nothing to do with politeness, its much more misogynistic than that...

Thing that weirds me out is the high number of white muslim men who seen so keen on imposing this on their partners in a couple of places Ive travelled through recently, leaves a bad taste in the mouth for some reason.

Only in extremely religious sections and most dont wear a veil at all, none of the men do. In many ways its a sexist item aimed at keeping women under control. While they dont want you to look at their women many of their men are very willing to look at naked images of women on the web.

It could be linked to the Jewish faiths directive that women who have sex outside of marrage should be stoned to death, but its OK for their men to go out and visit prostitutes.

Er..no. Thats not possible in a multi cultural and civilised society.

In school, you need people who do not scare or confuse children by dressing totally differently.

At work businesses want people to dress smart and presentable...you cant turn up to the office in jeans and t-shirt and say its against my religion to wear a tie.

The difficulty comes with less obvious or exrteme forms of dress...look at the turban wearing Sikhs(?).

It isnt a religion, its a dress code at best and usually its imposed on women by men.

Ban them in the workplace.

Wanna live in the west? Then you have to accept that women are your equals. Otherwise go home to Ignoramistan.

Got no real problem with Islam, other than its  another  "teakettle which revolves around Uranus" type myths. It mainly calls for love, honesty in lending, yadda yadda. Good universal stuff. It also calls for modesty in dress, not the subjugation of women.

Anyway, cant have people start claiming all kinds of exceptions because they believe in a sky wizard. We should allow such ignorant behavior  in a free society, but not coddle it.

Fig. 1. Western Woman.

Think through the process, if these women are forced to wear these things by their blokes and then you ban them from wearing them in the workplace, guess what? They aint taking off their veils, theyre staying home at the kitchen sink "Where They Belong".

Better to say yeah cool, wear that thing if you must but in our opinion the less you wear the better. Let people choose to stop wearing em.

btw Political Reasons/Family Reasons/Religious Reasons - whats the ratio?

And see fig. 1 for some perspective.

Slaguilera isnt the best example of typical western independant womanhood.

The veiled ninja suit malarky is a slap in the face of suffrage.

So we should allow a custom, which already is alienating and mysoginistic, just because otherwise it would get worse? Puhlease.  The argument was lost when a picture of  CA was presented. Thats sort  of like how the gay civil union people argue. "Whats next?"  they say, "men marrying dogs?"

If you want to be modest, business attire with a full length skirt, no makeup,  and a simple  up-do is about as vanilla as ya  can get.

When  religion intersects with the public arena and rational thought, it needs  to  know who has the upper hand, and that  is reason.

As far as Im bothered its up to the women what they wear, providing they arent pushed into it. It has to be their choice.

If a woman wants to wear a dress or skirt then Im not bothered. Same with a trouser suit or hotpants/miniskirt.

Ironically, where the aim of modesty is to blend in with the crowd, the veiled outfit in western society does a spectacular job of flying in the face of that aim. :/

Bingo.

You need  to integrate into your new society  to a certain degree. Just look  whats happened in France  when the Muslim community becomes alienated.
