Iv got a broke APC Smart 1400 :(

Was working fine but the battery was faulty so it went unused and disconnected for the best part of a year, iv just had to remove the lid and prise the battery out as it had expanded. Now it wont do anything when connected to the juice.

Any ideas?

Serious

If its one of the cheapo ones from e-buyer they had a recall IIRC.

Binary Shadow

Nope its an APC Smart 1400

Happens to be a leading brand :P none of the cheap crap lol

Rivkid

Nah its an APC Smart UPS - Ive sold hundreds with no problems.

Id call their tech support - theyve always been pretty good with my customers.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Binary Shadow

i doubt ill get far as its not under any warrenty as far as i can tell

Rivkid

Hmm you could try calling (or better still emailing) tech support and just ask for help without mentioning warrenty. We used to do this a lot - and unless you talking about them fixing it or replacing it they often dont ask. Theyll usually give you some good advice for free.

iv asked a question on their tech support site, hopefully they will have a quick fix, but i fear its as dead as they come.

the battery expanding doesnt sound good for a start, could have leaked acid sometime while it was in storage.

do they take the same style batteries as ive got in the rack server one here?
the batteries for that come in a "sealed" metal box casing with just a blue plastic plug to rig it up to the ups itself and a couple of vent holes.
no lid or anything, just like a big metal cartridge.

is there any corrosion on the battery or its compartment from where it might have leaked? it might even show as rust where the acid has attacked the galvinised steel.

Binary Shadow

i can say for sure that it has not leaked, altho i think its not far off it tbh, will be disposing of it soon enough

Binary Shadow

they look like this btw:

madmax

very different to the packs in mine, not too sure then now.

reminds me of a car battery at the minute, end of the day they all use lead acid ones so probably is with the power lead inplace of the terminals.

is it not supplying power with the battery missing?
i think mine will only do power out / power boost with a charged battery but will manage surges / spikes, slight boosts and power trim even without a battery attached.

if its not even lighting up the front display when attached to the mains without its battery then id guess that somethings died on the internal circuitry and its probably toast. :(

if youve had the lid off already, tried checking for a resetable trip or maybe a fuse thats gone.
i wouldnt go poking too deeply mind as im sure theyll have some huge caps in there to do smoothing that could definatly make your hair stand on end.

Binary Shadow

having been on the receiving end of a huge discharge from a cap some years ago i am a little wary or poking around too much, im getting nothing, no relay clicks no LEDs nowt :( i think its toast, iv checked the breaker on the back of course but i cant see most of the board unless i really pull it apart

Binary Shadow

ah hah, needs at least a partially functioning battery installed to fire up. Well that solves that then, tested it with the battery from my other UPS and it seems to be working as it should

Batteries in UPS have a distinct shelf life whether the UPS is in use or not; after that they tend to stop working or develop a tendency to incontinence..
