It was an IED - he tripped the wire yelled GRENADE then by the sounds of it lobbed himself backwards at it hoping his bergan/kit and CBA would take the brunt of it - his buddies would have probably hit the deck rolled away* or whatever their SOPs were.

The blast from a grenade will be sort of conical \ / thus rolling (staying low and covering less ground) can be more efficient than simply legging it - having buddies like that outstanding individual helps even more!
