never thought it would come to this....  :?

even though I did software engineering at uni and now work for a software firm I still know bugger all about computers and actively avoid ever having to learn too much as far as general IT geekery is concerned.  I used to laugh at linux users for being nerds tbh.. and thought they were all a bunch of muppets for not simply using windows.

Recently my computer decided to die - I thought no probs Ill just restart in safe mode and sort it - end result blue screen of death - computer wont even start in safe mode and even attempting to completely re-install windows f**ks up.

Only solution it seemed was to download and burn an ubuntu boot disk at work and install that - now I cant be arsed to use windows on this machine any more and am officially a Linux N00b.

( i realize this is sort of software related but it isnt meant to be a serious discussion on the merits of linux more a bit of irrelevant waffle thus Ive stuck it in the waffley bit of the forum)

I had it n my work lappy for awhile - was very impressed. I wouldnt have it for my main rig - but its a great second system

Normally if it wont boot and ends up refusing to install the best idea is to get out your rescue disk and format the drive from basics. Then do a reinstall.

Putting Linux on obviously works too ;)

Dave

it was more out of frustration tbh...

I had recently put some family photos on there that I hadnt yet backed up and so needed to get them onto a flashdrive or something before re-installing windows or reformatting anything (dont have a second computer in London I could stick the hard drive into)  - used the linux boot disk and thought actually ubuntu looks fairly easy to use so just installed it once Id saved the photos. Actually seems a lot faster than windows tbh...

Serious

Doesnt have all the bloat that windows installs. Damn shame maxi wasnt still on here as our resident guru.

Dave

seems to be fairly well supported on its own forums though

They will ignore you if either, they think your answers are so simple that you should be able to find the answer easily enough for yourself by reading the documentation, or, they are too difficult for them to answer.

Beaker

if you want to actually try a full-fat version of Linux then i swear by OpenSuse.  Best Distro ive used.

tbh using linux has nothing to do with it.

The fact you post on a forum is clue enough ;)
