Title: cold call about viruses - warn your non geek mates !
Post by: knighty on March 02, 2011, 17:56:00 PM
my sister phoned me today - someone phoned her, telling her they work with Microsoft and they've gotten her details from them, there's a new virus out that non of the virus scanners are picking up on, they want an email address so they can send a link to sign up and scan your computer (free) and if you're infected they'll remove it (£££)... she said she'd phone them back and then she phoned me to check if it was real - told her it's a scam and to stay well clear...

got home tonight.... and my mother has the exact same phone call today too !

so warn your non geek mates about it....

(I know, this is the kind of thing that goes around as spam.... but it's actually true... I didn't cut and past this etc...)

We had this a couple of months ago, my dad went straight up to the computer and started doing what they said. I went up to find out what was going on, and told him Microsoft would never call you, they wouldn't have your details and to hang up. He hadn't actually given them information, but my idiot of a brother decided to chime in and seemed to think that like in movies men in vans sit outside your house gaining access to your personal information.

Even after both me and Nige telling them nothing will have happened, they still cancelled their cards.

I think my grandad got one too, but he just politely informed them he'd never owned a computer in his life and hung up.

Yesterday I had a customer tell me they keep getting this same call every few days.

someone tried this on me once, I pointed out that all my machines run Linux as their primary OS and that I therefore didn't think MS would be overly worried about my machine or able to do much about it if they did. I then hung up.
