Did you know

If you purchase Hardware/Software and change your mind you have 28 days to return the item for a refund. (Under Gamestation T&Cs)

If you buy a console package, where they sell you all the items as a bundle, then ask to trade one part in for cash you need photo identification to prove who you are, according to Gamestation.

On the basis they just stood and sold me the said items, this makes absolutely no sense to me.

So, they will sell to you all day long without photo i.d, but to get a trade in (your money back), you need photo i.d. But to get your money back under 28 day terms you dont need i.d.

It makes sense under the UKs Pawn Shop laws.  If youre taking it back in 28 days you are just getting your money back.  However if youre selling it back to them they need you to prove who you are.  Seems odd, but its 2 different situations.

Ok its been a few years since I was a GS assistant manager but that doesnt sound quite right (unless theyve changed the policies). The 28 day return is a simple refund - you dont need photo ID for that same as every other shop in the UK. To trade in a game for credit/another game you shouldnt need ID - either theyve changed their rules, youve got it wrong or the guy was a numpty! Photo ID was only ever required when you sell them something for cash (which could be games youve got in a bundle), along with all the form signing etc.. This was intended to a) provide some protection if people were using GS to convert stolen games into clean cash b) persuade people to trade in rather than sell which was more profitable for the company.

Trust me i did not get it wrong, the whole transaction of asking which bundle i want and paying took me 5 mins tops, the fact is i wanted to trade 1 item back in for cash, an item that was 2 mins old and unused, brand new bought from them, and thus he told me to provide ID.

My comment was along the lines of "so you will happily take my cash all day long, but giving it back i need to bring a photo drivers licence or passport?". I then walked 11ft to CEX who paid me without ID. However i should have been an asshole and just asked for a full refund...

Right thats your problem right there trade 1 item back in for cash - theres no such thing. You trade something for cash - thats called buying it and GS for whatever reason require photo ID when they buy something from you. Thats why its different to a refund which you would only have been able to get on the whole bundle not just the game.  Im not saying its a good rule - or that I agree with it but its has been GS rules for years and I have in fact had to have this exact argument in store many times - Im sure Dooms will have had this problem too.

Rule, fact, whatever, its a joke :) and does nothing to motivate me to return to GS to shop more with them, and in this recession its all about keeping your customers.

Some rules are crazy. When you consider i can sell this in any number of places without the need for Photo ID, which was more my point , as expressed, i dont see the need for Photo ID.

Sounds stupid but thats how it works and always has worked at Gamestation (also worked there for a year).

Trade in = No ID
Cash = ID

I know its stupid because they just gave you the game so its not stolen but still its part of the paper work however the even sillier thing is the fact if you didnt want part of the package and wanted to trade it back for cash you should of just traded in against the cost of the console (instead of money).

No ID required and you get more for a trade in than for cash so you would of saved more money. Maybe your guys werent quite that helpful. We were ;) hehe

How can i trade a game in that i have not purchased against the cost of the console im about to purchase?

Unless you meant buy the bundle for £180 and tell them i dont want the controller + game, i.e. £37 trade in against the total price, so £143 to pay as balance? I could not see them going for this, they were adamant this time around to change the game for another if i wanted to, yet on a previous 360 bundle with 2 games they changed both games for me without question to two titles i wanted more.

I really think some stores make it up as they go along.

We used to do that if people didnt want the extras - I mean you might aswell becuase soon as you sell it to them they are just going to turn around and ask to trade in.

Gamestation makes alot more markup on traded in games than new ones so its an advantage to get a new game still sealed and be able to sell it as used :P

Also as for changing bundles it depends where the bundle has come from, if its something that store has done themselves then they can swap and mix all they want. Sometimes the bundles that come from Head Office come with a list of games that can be subbed.

Heh i suppose it also depends how much money they have made that week and if they really want the sale.

As you said tho, we used to make up random stuff all the time so Im sure other stores do the same ;)

Of course, the fact they are now owned by the GAME group could be a reason for the differing policies.

GAME are evil bastards.

Leon

Meh we were owned by Blockbuster when we worked there, hardly much better :P
