I spent Ã,£100 on a Bush ID 80gb PVR about 6months ago, and it is the biggest pile of crap ever! I have taken it back 3 times but they have all been just as crap.

Just needed to get that out!

What stuff have you bought that is just absolute crap?

Serious

Dixons/Currys are now just exchanging them for any in stock PVR but you have to watch out what you are getting in exchange, they probably wont have the same kind and many of them are single tuner so you cant watch and record freeview :(

netgear dg834g is a good one for me, works fine via cable, but wireless just doesnt work properly and i tried all the firmwares

Okay, its not good advice now, but something that big and expensive should always be researched. Cheap Bush/Aiwa/Sorny/Panaphonics/Ubertech pieces of kit are likely to die or have lots of problems. Consult the avenues of the DVD Forums and AV Forums, they always have good recommendations and the poeple there know what to keep at barge poles length.

Ive never taken to Netgear, they are the Bose of networking, while Edimax is the Bush

Only thing netgear Ill use are the wifi cards as theyre netgear in name only, the chips being standard. Routers=appalling and customer service is about as pleasant ast being kicking in the huevos...20X in a row.

You do often get what you pay for, but sometimes you get lucky. My $30 DVD player plays 16x9 films flawlessy on the big flatscreen. It just doesnt have any special features. It plays. Good enough.

I dont like generic hard drive players but flash memory ones are OK and my 7dayshop one that uses SD cards is definitely OK.

Im now using it on my exercise bike to stop me getting bored

Its a much rarer occurance these days I think. I spent Ã,£100 on my Pioneer DVD player and it is the smoothest mofo on the block and combined with a decent SCART gives stunning picture and it can do all the fanglies like SACD playback. It smacks a multitude of brown shades from the Compacks generic jobbie I had previously.

/me hugs his Pioneer 585

When it comes to electronics it isnt usually worth scrimping.

Mine does too,  with the UK pricing difference it ended up at Ã,£40. Although that included a set of cheap but reasonable 5.1 speakers, they are better than any internal TV ones I have heard.

Mongoose

my rents have got a Daewoo combo DVD-R VCR unit which is utter rubbish. It went back last week for a replacement (which Currys didnt want to do, they spent ages trying to prove that it worked and eventually gave up) but the replacement has exactly the same issues as the original.

Dont even always seem to get what you pay for anymore though, we had a string of cheapo VCRs. Dad eventually got board of replacing the VCR every 12 months so went and bought a JVC one, which cost twice as much and was about half as good.
