Elton what ever you think of him, still has a great voice.
Quite liked this performance when I saw it on youtube.

Lady Gaga makes my skin crawl.

Gah, "shes a monster" what the hell?

Its pretentiousness for the sake of it, shes trying far to hard to be a bit "weird" and quirky and it just falls flat on its face. To my mind its not clever, its not witty and its not artistic, and I cant stand it.

Thats fantastic. Now she just needs to dress it down and stop trying too hard; shes clearly got the musical talent so there really isnt any need for it. It really pushes my "I cant stand you" buttons.

I agree totally, the talent is there, but the over-production and wierdness for its own sake just annoys me.

Thing is she did that, Did it like that for years.
It is the odd state of affairs that she creates a character who is whacky, punk/pops up her songs and then bang, big hit despite actually being better in terms of song before. If you got to be whacky to be a hit then you go and be whacky :/
Any live acoustic performance she does of any of her current songs I have seen she is absolutely brilliant. It is a shame what you need to do to be popular :/

To be fair, this is how she markets herself and pretty much has to do this to survive - take a look at the productions of any of the recent award ceremonies, every artist has to come up with something special with story and interludes between different segments. To top it off its her creative outlet. To me its no different to the flocks of people getting piercings, tattoos, dying their hair and putting on makeup to be unique. The difference here is that she applies it to her pop persona and to her music; no one else can do what she does and she definitely has her own unique style.

I like her music and Im glad shes as successful as she is because for all the pretentiousness I think shes probably one of the most genuine people in the industry. Her credibility is ten times that of the Spears and Whinehouses of the world.

TBH I dont think Im anything like the target demographic for this kind of thing. I still experience music as a totally separate artform from the production and visual arts. Ive always found music videos to be pointless and uninteresting (yes, even ones by bands I actually like).

If my fiancee and I watch a TV show which includes a live performance she almost always comments on what the performer is wearing, whereas unless she mentioned it I wouldnt even have been able to tell you what the performer was wearing 5 minutes after the performance ended. I could probably tell you that he/she hit a bum note in the third chorus though.

Thinking about it, thats what I dont like about performances by Lady Ga-Ga, I dont like being forced to notice the production. Im only interested in the music and anything else distracts me from the interesting bit, and is therefore annoying. Most production you can ignore, or is used to cover up acts with no actual muscial tallent (a pair of Irish twins leap to mind), but Lady GaGa is so outrageous that it distracts from the music, which is a shame because the music is good.

If she was rubbish, I wouldnt mind, because shes actually pretty good I find it annoying.

I dont deny that she effectively has to do it now because thats the persona on which she has built her fame, but I do think its a shame and a waste. Maybe if she makes enough money being wierd shell return to her roots in a few years when she can afford to.

Totally agree with you there but we are the minority, Most of the youth it is all about image and the persona.
Anyone seen The Who though for the superbowl half time? Check it out on youtube.
Singing is not up to scratch and it sounds dodgy but I think that was the audio set up for the TV more then anything, probably sounded better live. That light system around them though was pretty cool and well used. Pulsing to the beat etc, I thought that was a really cool show.

I got my good headphones on to watch a movie before bed on my laptop and played this again. Eltons Voice is pretty dam good still. Said it earlier but yeah, he should be doing more mainstream stuff, it would sell.

This is exactly my problem with her. I dont mind her musically, some of her things arent really to my taste but its by no means rubbish or talentless, its actually rather good. However her fake persona is so forced and contrived that it detracts from any enjoyment of her music that I might have had because its so damn distracting, I always feel vaguely embarrassed for her. That clip? With the "shes a monster" thing going on? That actually made me physically cringe. I dont know precisely why, but it just manages to push all of the wrong buttons for me.

Im sad that, as Nige pointed out, she has to do this to shift albums and survive in the industry, however that in itself begs the question as to how genuine she actually is. Ive no idea at all... How can anyone make a comment on the person behind the songs when its so full of foo-foo candy coloured lace and spandex sh*t, anywhere and everywhere she goes, even on chat shows and suchlike when she isnt performing?

Lady GaGa is a shallow, atrocious charachter that I cant help but despise. Stefani Germanotta used to be/still is? a talented young woman who needs to stop trying so hard and let the music speak for itself, in my humble opinion.

It is all about making it!
Seen it on tv, she is well trained, learnt by ear to play the piano, went to top school for music and she was in the bars, clubs etc doing her thing getting more poppy. She has wrote for a number of the big pop stars and in the form of Lady Gaga has hit the big time.
You do get the hint of what she likes to do best when she does live performances, you get those pure singing, classical versions of her current hits in there but as Nige said you need this Big impacting look and feel to make it these days..
Now she is out there though she could very easily turn it down a notch or two, crank out the good songs and still do well

I have to admit that part made my eyes roll as soon as it came on, Im sure they could have come up with a better skit. I cringed at how long it dragged on for. But I enjoyed the rest of the performance.

Dress sense = -2. Tacky in the extreme and does nothing for her. Whole thing is so obviously staged to the Nth degree too, by an amateur.

Second is brilliant though.
