Sometimes you just see a picture and cant think anything other than "that cant be safe". Be great to set one of those up at work we had some health and safety peon telling us some cardboard boxes stacked neatly against a wall were a H&S risk, I think they would have a heart attack if they saw that :D

Imagine how many kids you could interested in physics in one hit if you could fire one of those up on the school field during double physics...

Makes the old van-de-graaff tricks look a bit crappy!

Lets be clear for a minute though, if that thing flashes on 10 feet from your nose, whether its for a second or a minute, youre going to be impressed.

I have a day job which takes all of my week and most of weekends so dont get much time to play.
Most of my projects have to be short and sharp, shoot and publish to the web.
Probably 4-5 hours total for this one.

At this power and with tuning being off and lots of streamer losses, longest spark will be about 3 feet.
Standing 6 feet away is safe. closer and it might bite you.  The earthed controller is closer.

This is the girls one. Didnt think you pussies were ready for the real thing.

In fact this was "passed" by our local Dept of Energy Safety. Turns out that once you drop
things down to 50 V then it is not really under their jurisdiction.  So I used an arc welder to drop 240V mains to 50VAC.
I then used another welder in reverse to take 50VAC and take it back up to 240VAC and run my coil.
The inspector who was actually quite reasonable, seemed happy with that provided I wasnt doing public displays.
Of course, no different to plugging directly into the mains.

Tesla coils are impressive not only for the sparks that rend the air but they are also very loud.
If you are not impressed, move closer. Of course I have built two bigger coils as well.

Here is a ground level shot.

and now ..

"The Aura of Sauron"

Not photoshopped!
Details of how it was done here (http://tesladownunder.com/tesla_coil_sparks.htm#Rotating%20long%20breakout%20point).
A lot harder to construct.
I wanted an effect like a World of Warcraft mage casting a spell perhaps.

On some maps you could put up multiple towers and erase battalions of tanks and men at choke points :D

You know you shouldnt laugh at their little blokes wandering down and getting hit simultaneously by six towers but for some reason you do
