The fundamentalists have had the law changed in South Dakota: abortion is illegal even if the pregnancy is caused by rape or incest.

The Native Americans in the area, whose reservation has the rights of an independent nation, will soon be providing the needed services for women:

Its interesting that the same group that fought to get such a draconian abortion law, is also anti-birth control

Methinks theyre pro-birth, not pro-life.

At least women in the state will get abortions, even if they have to go onto indian land to do it. The advice on contraception should be useful too.

Arent there are several states where the only casinos are on indian land?

Quotelife expectancy rate is 46 for men and 55 for women.

That is dreadful TBH.

knighty

retards, all of them

(the ones banning it i mean)

p.s. tho, good business opertunity ;)

Dave

The american indians seem to do rather well out of thier reservations - IIRC they also have a lot of internet based gambling operations who register in thier areas as well as the casinos already mentioned.

Max - Do they have to pay Federal taxes at all or are they pretty much independent?

maximusotter

Reservations are miserable places rife with unemployment, meth, and alcohol addiction. Some manage to survive through gambling, others suffer regardless of economic input.

Taxation and reservations has a long troubled history. Reservations are pretty much sovreign, but their land is managed by the Sec of the Interior. You used to be able to drive to the one near Seattle and buy ciggies tax free, but there are now various rules about taxing non-natives and such. The reason they have the casinos is due to the limited sovreignty.

Only the ones that can afford it. If youre 16 and have a bit of an "accident", theres no chance to get emergency contraception either, as the right wingers dont understand that its not abortion and have banned it as well.

Dave

I guess there is always the DIY option:

(btw.. Im serious - that is what may well happen in some cases if basic things like emergency contraception arent provided)

Coathanger abortions in the US are a myth perpetrated by the left.

When abortions were illegal, they were usually performed by doctors, albeit, on the sly.

Dave

alright but the point being that banning abortions just encourages on the sly operations etc..

Oh for goodness sake. Well, I know they think its a good thing to ban, but aarrrgghhh...

maximusotter

Its about the politics of religion is all. Im against prayer in the schools, but for a moment of silence. This allows the kids who want to pray to do so, the Buddhists may meditate, and the atheists may undress little Suzy in the third row. :D

Same goes for abortion: if you believe that kiddo has a soul at the moment of birth, well god bless ya and dont get rid of it.

The House Majority Leader, Tom Delay, btw--one of the biggest scumbags on earth, who used issues like this to divide the country, stepped down today. :D :D Hes scary and admitted today that he is working towards an officially (wingnut version) Christian country with a permanent Republican majority, and claimed moral righteousness, even though hes guilty of a mountain of scandal. Har har.

I think you could get hung for that :P

How many times do I have to tell you? Youre Dave, Im Serious :P

No matter what maxi says though there are plenty of instances of unqualified people botching abortions, banning them is just going to make the situation worse for the women.

Of course in most cases its the men who want to ban it.

maximusotter

The vast majority of abortions in pre Roe v Wade America were provided by health care professionals. Period. Fact. End of story. The "explosion of back alley abortions" is a myth conjured up by the left. Biggest problem that was faced back in the day, were unwanted children, or children parents couldnt afford to take care of, not to even begin discussing what a burden it was to women.

I dont subscribe to lies from either political extreme and prefer my opines to be based on fact, not that you have to agree with my opinion, just agree on reality. ;)

Serious

I said many instances, if you have a million illegal abortions and just 2% of them are conducted by non professionals you end up with 20,000 abortions conducted by amatures. I think that would give many instances ;)

Of course in the past its been almost preferable to have proceedures done by amatures as the professionals were ignorant and tended to loose people to disease.
