does anyone here have any experience doing either an masters in the design field or any other related post grad japery?

ive been looking at the rca for industrial  Design engineering which is a more advanced level of what ive been doing at bournemouth. The real emphasis is on the art/creative aspects ie :-

• innovation
• drawing and model-making
• form-finding: harmony, balance, proportion
• socio-cultural research
•materials technology and manufacturing
Im ok currently at these, however this would really give me the focus i need to become a better designer.

anyone have any thoughts/reccomendations?

Not in your field but did both and have some friends who are doing/did masters/phds in the arts.

Theres a big difference between the two though.  A masters is just like a year which is slightly harder than a degree (with some heavier coursework/project focus).  A doctorate is like 10000 times harder than both a degree and a masters and lasts 3-5 years.

General advice would be do the masters as long as you get a 1st/2:1 (far too many degrees around), dont do the PhD.  Getting doctoral funding alone in the arts would be very hard unless youre at the very top of your subject.  The demand for places is high and the workload is immense.  A job is far far far easier...

PS: Im also slightly biased in that I think for many arts students a PhD is a waste of time.  Better to get out there and learn on the job beyond masters degree level.  The masters degree will give you access to facilities and people you wouldnt have otherwise come across.  A PhD will have you doing something obscure which is often useful in the sciences - not so much in the arts.

ok, cheers. i thought doing an ma at the rca will sharpen my skills, and give me an idea as to what area to specialise in.
