Quote from: BBCItalys fashion capital, Milan, has announced a new catwalk code of conduct to protect young models vulnerable to anorexia.

It follows the ban on skinny models by the Spanish government at Madrid fashion week. Tim Allman reports.

Fine by me. You can still have skinny, as most of these girls are young and naturally thin. A BMI thats so low that you stop menstruating is really dangerous and a bad example.

Conversely, I want a very high BMI required for people that appear in fast food adverts. Cellulite should be mandatory and uncovered. Jiggling while enjoying burger is highly encouraged.

Bit of a loaded question putting the word too in there...

Should too hairy people be shaved
Should too fat people slim
Should drinking too much be stopped

Anyway I voted no.  Screw it tbh - if thin is what fashion designers want at the moment and women want to copy it then let them.  In my experience women as a whole are generally pretty self concious about evertything anyway be it body, hair, clothes, reputation, whatever.  If they changed it to being massive breasts or pale skin or any of the many ideals of the past theyd just worry about that.  Luckily most decent lasses can at least realise the difference between tv models and real sized people.  The ones who get hung up on it and feel the pressure to look a certain way are just the people whod have issues whatever the look was.

I cant help but thinking if the generic look of a super model was bigger than it is, more people would be less self concious.

Fact is these woman are anerexically thin and portrayed as beautiful, making a normal sized woman feel obese and ugly.

I dont think anyone should be forced to do anything, i just think it should be more common place, and there should be less pressure for girls to be so stick like.

Some people are skinny by nature, they shouldnt be demonised just because there are so many fat people shoving greasy food down their gobs.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Wow. Way to be a hypocrite and demonise the fat people in exactly the same way you dont want the thin people to be.

Tongy

Models are pathetic, mostly pretty but still about the lowest form of human life :D

I dont like gaunt ladies... like them with some substance, prefer a brain myself :D

Typically: Energy in > Energy out -> overweightness. Greasy food. Reality.

The catwalk models avg ~10lbs under their ideal weight. Wow. These skinny girls are maybe on telly for 10 minutes a year. Sure they may not all be right in the head but lets put this into context:

The guys who did this graph say below 20 is underweight, so its a little skewed.

So what about the zillions* of overweight people that you see every day? Where are most people getting their idea of normal or acceptable from?

Is the problem really that the relative gap between these models and the average weight of people is increasing by 2.5lbs a year?

*I could only find complete stats for Canada but there are 11 times more overweight people than there are underweight people, and 5 times more obese people than underweight there.

Slightly off topic but I dont quite follow the argument that overweight is terrible either.  We have improved medical knowledge and the ability to spend our spare time doing what we enjoy.  For many this involves eating and drinking so they get overweight.  I dont quite get why its a problem to anyone for them to be like that.

Smoking and the like fine - it hurts other people.  Drink driving yup it hurts others.  But being over weight?  Being skinny?  Beyond needing to make some of the seats on things like the tube a bit wider or clothes available in larger sizes I dont get the issue.  Its like racism for countries like the UK who tend not to care about race as m,uch these days.

Personally Im bang in the middle of average and go to the gym a couple of times a week so I can drink and eat take away while still being fit enough to do sports and attract women I find attractive.  But I dont get the fat hatred people seem to have developed recently.  Its the same as this anti thin model stuff.

Seriously if people just got off each others cases and left each other to it the problems go away.  Its people being tits to each other thats the issue not how skinny the model on tv is or how fat the person in the drive through is.  It really shouldnt matter.  Noones saying go hug a skinny/fat person and marry them just use some common sense before bitching about people being too far from the norm.  This is no doubt falling on deaf ears but seriously people need to climb out from under their rocks and have a look around sometimes.

Sorry thats a bit of a rant but really hate this random fixation people have with weight.  If were all going to get obese who the hell cares?  Just make my kids car seat go a bit further back and work on making health supplements that balance out the crap in the food.

Couldnt have said it better myself Steve. I always thought diversity was something to be celebrated.

Mmm, SteveF thats the way I like to think some of the time.

Like most women I wish I were smaller but Im not neurotic to the extent that it makes me miserable - heck, if I was, Id have done more about it by now!

Of all the vices I could have, I think eating a little bit more than a should, or being a bit more lazy than I should, is pretty tame.

TBH, if I spent my life counting calories, going out for runs, generally trying to sculpt my perfect body... I may end up with said perfect body but I wouldnt be enjoying my life very much!!

Im very cuddly, sport a fairly large arse, according to the BMI Im just tipping the scales at obese. BUT Im happy. I can attract men, I can cycle up a steep hill, and the extra weight doesnt bog me down.

I do think possibly some of the very very skinny waif-like women used by designers are a bit extreme. I think the fashion/modelling community should examined, Ive heard many a horror story about eating disorders and girls feeling they have to sleep their way up to the good jobs.

But if theyre naturally waif-like, then fair enough! Were all different :)

I have to admit that I voted that they are too skinny.
I saw Steves point and now I do have to agree with him on that.
He made some very good points however, I do still think that models are too skinny, it cant be doing their own health any good.

Bit of a loaded answer, define too hary.

And in every magazine they can be pushed. It isnt even just that they look thin but the processing people stretch them out even more so they look far skinnier than they are.

Obese people tend to need more medical treatment than more normally weighted ones resulting in your tax bill being higher.

Exercise burns up fat.

Its bits like that which have made Britain what it is today, full of chavs and criminal kids. The problem wont just go away, it never does, you just dont see it.

Health supplaments wont do that, you need to change peoples ways.

Oh dear lord Serious, Id have thought you of all people would have been around long enough not to ask things like that by now. I do not want to see the pictures that are sure to result!
