Title: That dress
Post by: Serious on March 07, 2015, 11:18:41 AM
An item that seems to have created a great deal of discussion, especially on twitter, is it gold and white or black and blue?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-31656935

Picture from Original dress by the maker clearly shows it is black and blue, but the photo taken by someone else seems to show white and gold, well not quite, the white looks a little blue.

Firstly the photo seems washed out because of massive over exposure - a common issue with digital cameras the apparent white is indeed blue but much lighter than the original. The black is washed out to a murky brown/gold color. You can sort this out yourself by copying the picture and using the colour picker in paint. Everything else is how the brain translates the visual 'clues' in the photo. Problem is not everyone's brains translate this in the same way so different people will see different colours.

Of course, I may be completely wrong....

I have seen the pic a few times at different places and I  can see it in both variations of colour.
Monitor Colour may also have an impact as well.

I have normal eyes and even on the sh*ttiest of screens have yet to see it in anything other than the correct blue/black

Yes, except while the original dress is blue black the picture isn't. Try picking that black and flood filling a new picture area with it. While you may have 'normal eyes' your brain's processing of the image is what matters here.

People who see the blue correctly automatically adjust the goldish colour to black. Those who see the goldish colour correct adjust the blue to white, although there is still a slight blue tinge to it.

So the fact is nobody sees the picture correctly. The real colours of the dress in the over exposed picture are gold and light blue.

I  thought it had more with surrounding light and angles to do, pictures posted with white gold on one and blue and black on the other looks to me just like that, so I think it has much to do with both light and surrounding colours to do. There is many things posted of colours that are the same but look different depending of surrounding colours or shade. We also see colours differently though.

Lighting conditions, camera software and human brain all have their part to play. The eye of the beholder relates more to the brain than the eye.

I just saw it as blue and brown... never saw it as white gold

I understand that in real life it is blue and black but it looked/was brown in the actual picture
