Naughty mofos you lot...
QuoteNewsgroups are by no means 0-sec, usually they will have files within 1-2 days and they carry most releases. They also have heaps of old stuff, which can also be ideal
People upload to newsgroup servers so you can download off them. Your current isp may have its own newsgroup type service but the groups which you will be after ;) ;) will most likely not be on there or have a low retention (retention means the files will be deleted after say a week as compared to 2 weeks with another server) The speeds aren't capped to the best of my knowledge, I cant really say as I only have a 1mbit connection but I have heard of some people maxxing a 4mbit connection.

Servers :-
The best server Imo has to be www.newshosting.com they have great customer support they charge 14.99 which is around 8 pounds.
A slightly more expensive but better retention is given by http://www.giganews.com/ for $24.99 a mo which is about 13 pounds.
Another alternative would be www.usenetserver.com which is similar to newshosting.
The problem for UK users arises when they don't have a credit card and only a debit card which is switch, solo or similar. I can happily say that these companies do accept Visa Electron *wow*. If you have a switch/solo card, try
www.eurofeeds.com – not great but not really many other options, they also do only capped packages.
Newshosting accept paypal but for 6 month accounts only.
Giganews Accept paypal payments on request.

Clients :-
The best imo is newsleecher,
www.newsleecher.com – it costs about 18 pounds for 2 years upgrades and support which is well worth it, there is also a trial available which is also ideal. – In this tutorial I will be showing how to use this.
A free alternative to newsleecher that is as easy to use is http://nzb.wordtgek.nl/
Other popular ones include x-news, newsrover and grabit.

The last thing you need to get is a sub to newzbin.
Nzb's are files that tell you client software where to download the files from on the server, I.e which group and filename, this will save you lots of time and imo is essential to downloading from servers.
www.newzbin.com once you have signed up go to your account and select premium credit topup. This costs 25 pence a week, which is more than worth it.

So lets get started

1) Choose a client
2) Choose a Server
3) Subscribe to newsbin
4) Install newsleecher and load it up, you should be confronted with a screen similar to this

Click add new server

In the server address box type your server address, which for newshosting is unlimited.newshosting.com and your user and pass. Click connect to check if it connects up, it will come up with the message "idle and ready for action"
5) Now you have to download a .nzb file for the release you will download. Go to newzbin.com and find a release you are after, now where it says "get message ids" you should click that and wait until the download box opens. You should either save that somewhere or open it. It will automatically open newsleecher and add the files into a queue, click download queue and check they are all there.
6) Click connect and the files will start to download, at the bottom it tells you what speed its running at. The default download folder will be C:\Program Files\NewsLeecher\downloads\ personally I would go into the options menu and click nzb files section and check "download .nzb to subfolder" this means that it will create a subfolder with the release name and download files to there. Now wait until all the files have finished downloading,
7) The files will generally be in the form of rar files so you can extract them in ths usual way with winrar by right clicking and pressing extract. Occasionally there may be CRC errors or a file missing, don't worry this can be resolved.

PARS
These are used to repair broken damaged or missing files. They are usually posted up with the file that you would have just downloaded. Its really easy to repair them, first download quick par from http://www.quickpar.org.uk/ double click any of the par files and it will open quickpar automatically. It will then begin to verify all the data automatically.

(Image removed from quote.)

I would click auto repair at this point and it will do all the rest automatically, when its finished click exit and try to extract the file again and it should work ?. Just burn the image that you downloaded to disk and that's it!

A NEW AWESOME TOOL I HAVE FOUND!!!! - THE FOLLOWING WILL ELIMINATE THE NEED TO PAR AND EXTRACT MANUALLY!!! SAVES TIME!
http://www.svcd2dvd.com/Software/RarSlaveGUI.aspx

Download RARSLAVE and its gui from the link, its towards the bottom of the page.

Extract all the files into the same folder and launch RARSLAVEGUI

(Image removed from quote.)

Click the little folder icon and point it to your newsleecher dir.
Tick all the boxes.

This will now automatically par and extract all your downloads - neat huh

Eggtastico

newsbin is much better than newsleecher IMO

anyway, find a NZB site, where you download the NZB file & load it into your usenet client. should start downloading then
