Never, ever build a PC for someone else - youll be taking support calls for the rest of your life. I wouldnt go as far as recommending Dell consumer stuff as being good either, especially the low end stuff with their 50p psus and £5 Foxconn boards. Sure, you cant go wrong for £200 but it aint gonna be good. Id still get a laptop.. but for a bloke at work I wouldnt bother doing all the footwork for him.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

wise words those, every PC Ive ever built for myself has been rock solid, and every one I built for someone else as a "favour" has always been trouble.

I agee & 3rd what Pete & Mongoose said.
Dont built PCs for others. Family are even worse.

Now there is a grey area, and thats parts.

I often pass on working parts after an upgrade, and even help friends install drivers etc. But the support ends there.
They take the kit knowing its 2nd-hand (albeit well cared for  -) ) and its FREE (or sometimes a meal or return favour, but no hard currency)  So any problems means they dont feel obliged to banging on my door.
