The system we had then was only slightly worse than the Americans have now. Corporations and republicans make it stay that way by spouting propaganda on TV, in newspapers and every other media.

The present day Conservatives are very little different, having become far more elitist and right wing after Thatcher came to power. I don't really blame them, their supporters are big business and the rich. Then their MPs and Lords aren't exactly short of a million either.

Our problem is simple, we can keep people alive longer but that doesn't mean they are healthy over that extended time period. Older people need much more health care. We need to find low cost options that keep people fit and healthy, not just extend the number of years they live.

I do think that "just keeping people alive" also means a lot for the total economy by keeping fathers, mothers, providers etc. alive, you win a lot, people who would have lost homes or jobs because of illness for instance.
