Quote from: XEntityHi Mark,

Just been having a look at the 800 series, and noticed that the hub is 10MBits unless I go for a 87* (Which I dont think there are any around)

My concern here is not the network computers as I can use another hub but more the broadband, I should be being upgraded to 10Meg soon, which will take me to the peak of the routers capability, so I expect for 1 it wont be able to use the whole 10 meg and two if my BB gets upgraded then it wont handle higher than 10.

You mentioned a second hand "proper router" which model were you talking about here?

Or do you know of any other 800 series that support 10/100 i.e. ones thatll be on ebay :)

Thanks for all your help guys!

Jake

Loads of 800s have fastethernet ports - you dont need to get a current model

If you have a static IP its fairly easy to bridge it - your dialer interface config would be something like this

interface Dialer1
 ip unnumbered Ethernet0
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer pool 1
 dialer-group 1
 ppp authentication chap pap callin
 ppp chap hostname xxx@xxx.com
ppp chap password 7 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx      -   (encrypted)
ppp pap sent-username xxx@xxx.com password 7 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx       -   (service password-encryption is enabled hence the hash)
 hold-queue 224 in

you then set eth0 (or fa0) to have your public IP

route for 0.0.0.0 is of course dialer1 in that case

Ok wish I knew what all that meant!

Unfortunatly no static IP..

...Need to get some good cisco nerding on really, would be useful to know...

Got my eye on a few ebay auctions at the moment.. will let you know which one I end up getting, might have to pick up a cisco cheap if there is one going, just to get some learning on!

Just in case anyone is bothered....

Managed to get a Firebox Soho 6 off eBay... .for £11 +£7p&p !!!!!

Absolute Bargain! .... now looking for a suitable 802.11n wireless access point to pair with it!

Soho6 seems a good router... no problems so far... and the new version of this router is about £250!! (Mine is an older version obviously but a good spec in its day)

Might pickup a cisco still to have a play with, if I can find one going cheap.

Cheers

Cool, I have a SOHO6 sat here running my firewall and routing.  Good little things arent they?  Ive had this running about 8 weeks withotu a reboot :D

XEntity

Cool... quick response!

Have you tried setting up a VPN through it? I have the software from watchguard.. when I registered the soho with them, just dont really know how to set it up... although I havent really looked yet.

Also I got a years worth of free anti-virus from mcaffee when I registered my router... I think the router may have never been registered?

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but thought I would share my happiness with the Soho 6....

... As I have registered my router with WatchGuard I have been give a years worth of Mcafee Total Protection!! (Business Virus/Spyware/Firewall)

It is centrally managed from the WatchGuard site to set the settings for each of the services i.e. set scan schedules, exclusions, firewall settings, browser protection etc etc.

I can also install the client on many machines, and set different groups and policies, and the client picks up the new settings when they auto update!

All this is reported on the site, so you can see which are up to date and any detections etc!

For the price I got the router the virus/spyware protection alone is worth more!

Just thought I would say as very happy with this box!
