Not only did I hear it go it flipped out the circuit breaker downstairs, same when I did it again. No idea on what its taken with it either.

Etasis 650watt job so not cheap rubbish, unlike my dirt cheap golden one which worked for years without issue and is now being used by my nieces son.

:?

Anyone got an idea of the legal issues involved if its blown the MoBo/CPU/drives/graphics cards/memory?

Shaun

You wont get anywhere trying to claim the PSU took other components out when it blew tbh

The counter augment they would use is that another component might have blown and took the PSU out with it, as there is no way to prove it without expensive testing which more than likely would cost a lot more than the components are worth :(

Eggtastico

PSU cant be blamed for a surge..
Should have got a Surge protector that comes with ££££ insurance

What makes you think it might have blown other components? Scorch marks? Blown tracks? If there arent any then chances are that everything else is fine.

Serious

I have a surge protector, nothing came in. Havent opened the machine yet to remove the PSU so will have to do that over the next couple of days and RMA it.

Reason I suspect it might have caused damage to other components is that the same thing has happened to my brothers computer and the motherboard and CPU were fried, even though there appeared to be nothing wrong visually with either.

Will have to take the one Im using to bits in order to check if the components in the other still works or not.

If its past experiences...to try and even the balance out...a friends PSU blew, complete with sparks and smoke, whilst he was playing WoW. All he needed though was a new PSU and he was sorted. No other components were fried. He was a total computer noob too and managed to remove and replace the PSU on his own :)

Maldonado

Its not the norm for a PSU to take out other components in my experience.

Pete

PC should be ok. PSU might even fire up again if you let it sit cold for a while.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I had a PSU blow a few years back, there was a really loud crack and loads of black smoke poured out of it, nearly had a heart attack as I was only about 3 feet away from it :P

It took my graphics card and the mouse port on the mobo I ended up just RMAing them all.

The Magic Smoke Escaped!!!

To be fair the great majority of the time its just the internal fuse that blows.  However I used to have a very nice PSU That cost me a fortune (Antec or Asaka, cant remember anymore).  When it blew it took out my motherboard, and it was on my filtered & Breakered extension lead as well.  That was annoying.  Cheap PSUs blow the internal fuse most often, because they are crap and the fuses are always rated too low.  However better a blown PSU than a blown system.  Oh, and avoid Thermaltake PSUs.  On cracking one open recently to swap the fuse on it I found out the ones from about a year and half ago are just colorsit PSUs.  i.e. Not Worth The Extra Cost.  Might as well just buy the cheapy £20 Own-Brand as those.

Finally managed to switch PSUs and it boots, drives seem to work, looks like Ive been lucky this time ;)

Now to arrange for a RMA.

Ta for advice offered.
