Hello,

Im looking to upgrade as in the title, i am a AMD user but would like to know which way to go as there are so many different sockets and cpus availible now ( i have not upgraded for 5 years ) .

Ideally i would possibly like to try an Athlon 64 cpu as ive heard great things about them,  but also looking at intel DC cpus.

Also i would like to know which motherboard is the best to get for athlon 64 DC cpus as ive always bought Abit and have been please with thier motherboards, but could use some guidence. .

Setup would be watercooled, current setup socket a with DD Maze 3 waterblock, can i use the maze 3 waterblock to cool athlon 64 cpus?

Is it a good time to upgrade?

Any comments or help would be much appreciated.

Thankyou all,

Squonk

You might have a problem using your current waterblock with a new mobo, as the screw mountings on an AM2 (newest AMD socket) mobo are completely different. if your current block uses a socket clip you might be ok (though Im by no means sure about that).

Your best options for which way to go are either an athalon64 X2 on an AM2 socket, or one of the new Intel Conroes, depending on what takes your fancy/budget/coin toss.

If you do go for a new waterblock, may I recommend an Dangerden TDX (tis what I have :) )

Thansk for the info,

what mobo do you have ?

Ive got an ASUS socket 939 board, but AM2 is the way to go (I upgraded too soon).

if you want to go the AMD route you _must_ go for the AM2 socket.  When the next Gen AMD come out at the end of theyear/Early 2007 they are unlikely to be available in S939.

If you are desperate for newest and fastest then the Intel Conroe chips are want if you are buying now.

Either way AMD or Intel will produce something youll find will run almost anything.
