My 28" Sony Trinitron CRT recently died  :(

So I replaced it with a 32" Sony Bravia LCD, which is great except the sound isnt as good as on the old CRT :(

So Im thinking off getting replacement speakers to beef up the sound Ive been thinking about a 2.1 setup, as the layout of the room doesnt lend itself to rear speakers,  I dont want to spend a fortune either maybe 200quid tops.

Im a noob in this area so any advice gladly received  :-)

Its hard to get a decent 2.1 system these days, most cheap package units are 5.1.

Id get a cheap amp and some value bookshelfs from somewhere like Richer Sounds.

No rear speakers ..... mate, knock down the wall!!!!

You can get a lovely surround sound setup for under Ã,£200 notes.  I cannot remember the model, but I have got a Panasonic (would not normally buy Panasonic) 5.1 surround sound setup.  It cost about Ã,£160 and I looked at the reviews in What Hi_Fi and it was compared with a Sony equivalent and B&W setup and came out as being on a par with sound quality but better as it was incredibly cheaper.  I also went to the shop for a sound test and compared it to a much better Sony setup and I really could not tell the difference.

Thats because Sony are actually pretty crappy and not value for money. You pay for the name.

Yup, you can even get a vintage amp or a new one. Matters little. If youre cool, get a 77 Marantz with excessive switches, VUs, and backlighting. Bookshelvers with 4" "woofers" will offer the best mid range for proper voice reproduction, and boost bass with a cheapie 8" or 10" powered Yamaha sub (or similar).

a pair of

and an av amp would do you#

floor standers imo, you dont need a sub then as they reproduce bass a lot better due to the amount of air they have in the case.

Those Eltax will give awful response IMO, no point having bass if its going to be a wall of mud. Better off with these Kef CRESTA 10, theyll give much tighter response and if the bass isnt enough theres the sub option.

Ive got a pair of Mission M74 speakers in Black if you can collect em you can have em for Ã,£50

Goblin

Buy the M74s, they are a lovely speaker, really warm without being wooly.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

Unfortunately true, I had a pair of speakers and amp for the same purpose, mainly cause my dad tended to ramp up the volume and cause horrible distorsion. They were later added to my compy for excellent sterio sound.

Bought em from Richer sounds too. TBH any reasonable set of speakers will run rings around a TVs internal ones. Even the cheap ones attached to my DVD player are better than the TVs own.

Stateside, I see that Amazon has those JBL Creature II speakers on sale for $60. Nice and compact, and sound better than most compy 2.1 systems. I like the way they look like pacman ghosts.

 Im near Manchester  :(

Ive been thinking  :P  if I get a amp and say speakers such as the Mission M74s or something similar would I be able to add a sub and 2 rear speakers at a later time or would I need special front speakers? (when I talk the Mrs into changing the room round)

Thanks for all advice so far :)

Porch Monkey

That would depend on the Amp that you buy. But basically yes. As long as your speakers are reasonable, full range jobs then you could get by without the sub to start with.
