Well I cannot see a "safemode" install.

The options I have are:

Install to the Hard disk
Install a LAMP server (which is what I want)
Check CD for defects
Rescue a broken system
Memory test (giving it a go)
Boot from first hard disk

F1 = Help
F2 = Language
F3 = Keymap
F4 = VGA (could this be it ??)
F5 = Accessibility
F6 = Normal mode (wtf is normal mode ??)

help me bummie1ken-obi, youre my only hope !

Mardoni

Ahh well I select the LAMP install as I want Apache, MySQL and PHP :)

One thing I have just thought of: Its lucky i am on a max DSL connection given the GBs of patches and apps I will have downed over the weekend :o

Mardoni

LOL, it all reminds me of the fated night in 2000 when I bought a discount box of Suse and thumbed my nose at Clippy, then spent the entire night, going WTF and emerging at dawn with a rudimentary understanding of it all. :lol:

Mardoni

All I want to do is find a distro that is:

1) Stable :o
2) Provides good Samba Read/Write support
3) Runs Apache, Mysql, PHP ;)
4) Allows VNC connections
5) HAS A GUI !!

LOL.

Mardoni

lol, damn right :p

Its quite funny, I cannot believe how much I take for granted because of being a MS user for the past decade :o

Its very very funny. Using Linux is like going back in time ;)

Mardoni

No wonder Ubuntu make a big deal about the LAMP install only taking about 15mins...

...the trick is that the GUI install takes the rest of your life :D

Mardoni

bugger !

Im watching the apt-get ubuntu-dekstop linux-386 install progress and its failing with loads of font errors.

I think Ill be downloading the Ubuntu Desktop distro now.

If anyone ever says that linux is easy to me again I will give them a complete mouth full.

edit:
Before I do the download, is there any benifit in getting the DVD rather than the CD iso ?

Its not a step back in time though is it. Just cause M$ has put a gui for most things deosnt make it better. less able to control what you want is the reality.

You want to do an awful lot in such a short time. think how easy driving is, did you pass you test on your first lesson???
All thats happened is you forgot how hard windows was the first time youve used it.
Nowt wrong with a good linux distro or windows. imagine how good linux woulkd be compared to windows if linux had the user base windows does!
Windows isnt that good when you think the amount of money , time and people work on it.
