My mum has got an old computer and has just done a reinstall of 98 (well someone else did), and everthing seems ok, but in display properties the res wont go above 640x480 16 colours.

Its onboard graphics, and Ive installed the drivers again from the motherboard disc, but it still wont go higher. And she needs it higher to run some programs.

Also, on another Win98 machine it has the following problem:

On bootup, the following error occurs-
Windows registry checker
Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry . Windows will restart and repair the registry for you.

If I click OK to restart, the same message appears and the cycle continues. Alt+F4 closes the dialouge box, but causes the machine to reboot, and again, the cycle repeats.

Check how much ram is used for the onboard gfx, if it aint enough in the bios it wont do more than 640.

Itd probably be quicker to format:C the latter machine.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Had a very similar problem with a friends computer and the bios solved it, worth a look anyway. As to the second one what sdp said if you havent got a full backup of the registry.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

How do I check the how much ram is being used on the graphics card?  And how do I up it etc? As it did use to work.

Beaker

usually 2 or 4 Mb on systems of that type of install and probable spec.

Go in the bios and have a look for video memory, should be an option to increase it. Should be a way to check it in windows but I cant remember fo sure.

If that aint it make sure the monitor is set to "default monitor" or "plug n play monitor" and I dunno if "std svga" drivers are available for the video but if they are give em a go.

For the latter pc theres a scanreg/repair or scanreg/fix thing that might work at the command prompt.

Details are sometimes in system properties but usually in display properties, right click any clear area of the screen choose properties/settings/advanced/adapter if you cant find it there then have a look through the ohter tabs
