Dave.

I prefer Thin Lizzys "cover".  "Whiskey In The Jar" is actually a traditional Irish song and has been recorded by loads of artists.

Emmylou Harris - "For No One", awesome cover of the Beatles song, I think its somewhat more emotional.

The Meads of Asphodel; What a Wonderful World.

Thought Id throw the cat amongst the pigeons there.

Bill Baileys Slayer parody of "mirror mirror on the wall" :)

Sam

I shot the sheriff - Clapton

Say hello wave goodbye - Gray.

Russell

What about Marilyn Manson covers? Tainted Love, Personal Jesus, Sweet Dreams etc

Usually much better than the orignals imo but the orignals are still good though.

Im not really a Marilyn Manson fan but I am partial to his cover of Sweet Dreams.

Tainted Love was abysmal.

Yar, shes famous for doing "covers". Tbh, here in Butcher Holler, the home of Country (but not Western), theres a tradition of songwriting, and most recording artists not writing all or even most of their stuff. Emmylous always been a gal to not try to shine in the limelight too much, though she did have a period from 75-85 where she was rather productive. These days, she just shows up a lot at gigs and sings harmony with a refreshing lack of ego. Awesome beautiful woman. LOVE her stuff with Gram Parsons from the early 70s.

Emmylou Harriss cover of Gillian Welchs "Orphan Girl" on the Daniel Lanois produced Wrecking Ball. Mind, I like the production better on Welchs record, but Emmylous voice just takes it. Seen them both sing together in a small venue. Goosepimpley. :D Gillian and her partner Dave have their studio down the street.

Both records are smart Americana records that dont insult your intelligence. :ptu: The later Gillian stuff is a bit less stark. "Time, The Revelator*" and "Soul Journey" are brilliant as well. Youll flip over Daves subtle and tasty guitar solos. Hes one of the few folks in this guitar town than most players will fess up to being in awe of. :D

Sorry to gush, but such stuff is music thats really close to my heart.

Dont look like much, just a flat black Ford
The engines clean, I could paint it someday
But most of the time I like it this way

*This was recorded in Studio B across the Cumberland River from me. Hauntingly beautiful, the opening track has some of the tastiest guitar work from Dave. Its great seeing him play the little unassuming Epiphone from 1935.

Elvis Costellos cover of Gram Parsons "Im Your Man (Hot Burrito No.1)" is rather good. :ptu: Its called "Im your toy" in the track listings. An album only a true Costello fan could love. I think its ballsy as hell. What other new wavers were coming to Nashville to record old standards in 1981?
