How do you get to the Swap File section in Win98 please??

Cheers :)

Pete

http://www.bootdisk.com/swapfile.htm

There is a setting to make win shy of using the swapfile in systems with tons of ram I think.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

In system properties/performance iirc you can switch it off or limit it

Quoteright click my computer
properties
advanced tab
click settings in the preformace box
advanced tab
click change at the bottom under "virtual memory"

you can set the swap file, disable it etc...

2gig or ram here so ive got it dissabled.... but I used to disable it when I only had a gig too :)

if you disable it, and windows decides it really needs it, it will temporeraly auto enable it and give you a little "!" next to your clock ;)

oops sorry, I posted that before I saw the Win98 bit !

can;t remember where it is in 98 :(

arf!  From the link:

QuoteThere is some really horrible swap file advice going around these days. Many people are suggesting you take your RAM, multiply it by 2, and set that amount to the min and max size of your swap file. Why is this wrong? Well, if my computer has only 32 megs of ram, this theory suggests I should set my swap file to 64 min 64 max. And if my computer has 256 megs of RAM my swap file should be set to 512 min 512 max. Thats horribly wrong. In theory a person with 32 megs of RAM needs more swap file than a person with 256 megs of RAM in Win 98.

bear

Yeah 2Ã,½ times is good from 256 - 512 but the good thing is to set it as fixed size.

Cacheman was often used to tweak 98

Serious

I have 1GB real and 1.5x that disk cache in WinXP, works perfectly well

Once you get to 1GB real in 98 the cache hardly matters unless you are doing something really heavy.

If you are regularly using swap then it pays to upgrade the memory as it will slow *everything* down.

chrisdicko

Im not sure how much it has, but I know it isnt going to be a lot.....Id guess either 128 or 256.........so in theory what should they be set at guys for either of them memory amounts?

Its just for this problem I asked a week or so ago:
On bootup, the following error occurs-
Windows registry checker
Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry . Windows will restart and repair the registry for you.

If I click OK to restart, the same message appears and the cycle continues. Alt+F4 closes the dialouge box, but causes the machine to reboot, and again, the cycle repeats.

After a bit of googling, it seemed to come up with not enough Swap File?!?!?! Do you think it could be a solution??

Cheers again!

Pete

Just set it to 1gb.

And no.

Min and Max?

Pete

min=1gb, max=1gb

If youre not getting some for this job just tell whoever owns it its broke and they need a new machine.

^^

if its for a non-geek (which Im guessing your mother is) then you should do everything you can to get it running xp !

chrisdicko

Well what it is, is she runs a traning school for lads who are going to be fishermen, and get them qualifications, so they can do other things when the fish eventually run out.

Its all privately funded......so they have no money.....and I dont think the computers will run XP?! Also, they would need to buy 6 licenses which would cost a lot wouldnt it???? Id love them to be on XP as I cant really so 98  :whoops:
