A while ago, I asked about a computer of my mums, and the problem was the onboard graphics wouldnt go above 640x480......

So I got hold of a graphics card, plugged it in, installed the drivers etc, and all seemed to be going ok.......but in display settings, I still cant move the resolution slider thingy, so is still sitting at 640x480....which is no use.

Any ideas whats wrong guys??

OS? Gfx cards used? Can you give us some more information?

This is using the same motherboard though right?

Serious

1) Which OS and graphics card.

2) You did switch the on board graphics off in the bios didnt you?

3) Check the drivers being used are the right ones for the new card, if you are running XP then even the standard VGA driver should give you better output.

Its Windows 98 SE, and using a graphics card with the details:
 Model.: PV - S04A - LR V2.0 W03/04
SiS 315E 32MB DDR
S/N: FCH034485
There is also a hologram sticker saying PINE

Yeah, im using the same motherboard which has the onboard graphics on,..................But, no serious I aint turned onboard off in Bios......but it is working through the graphics card....but has the crap resolution still

chrisdicko

Onboard graphics was greyed out when I checked in BIOS now ive put that card in!

Set your refresh to 60hz and have a look see what monitor drivers are installed.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

chrisdicko

I cant see any refresh rate anywhere! I had a look before.

I can find it in XP. but not 98! :(

When you look in the display properties what does it say under display adapter and monitor in settings (I think)?

It should tell you whether the drivers have taken or not, I reckon the driver is not the right one.

We used to put Pine stuff in basic office PCs when I worked for a box shifter, not too bad but they are buggers for drivers. Where did you get your drivers from?

knighty

i remember an old trick in win98... boot up in safe mode and check the drivers again....

sometimes theres half a dozen all installed at once but you can;t normally see them :o

restart in safe mode, remove them all, restart and re-install the right ones when your back into normal 98 :)

chrisdicko

This is the driver I used http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sis315-security.html

Also, knighty, there is only that one driver listed there.

Tongy, under display, it says:
Plug and Play Monitor on standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
The if I look in the properties, and driver it says:
Provider: Microsoft
Date: 4-23-1999

Pete

standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA).. you wont get more than 16 colours with that.

1. Go to device manager.
2. Uninstall everything thats under display adapters, including the above. Reboot.
3. Go through the add new hardware and add the gfx card and use the SIS drivers.
