Title: It's been a while...a mix of photos
Post by: zpyder on August 16, 2011, 17:03:17 PM
So I'm now unemployed and have finally gotten around to experimenting a bit more with my photography. I've tried to force myself to learn how to use my camera more and not post-process as much as I used to...

First off, I was in Oxford on Friday. I struggled to find anything worth photographing that didn't have a mass of people in front of it, and that possibly hadn't already been photographed a thousand times that day. This is one of my favourites, as I think it kind of looks like a space invader.

I spent a little time hunting bees in the back garden. They loved the lavender. It was a struggle as it was overcast though. Took a few hundred shots and this is maybe the best. Not necessarily the sharpest of the bunch, the struggle was getting any kind of composition as it literally was a spray and pray approach.

I was in Milton Keynes on Thursday, and experimented in one of the underpasses with taking a long exposure whilst focusing in or out. It reminds me a bit of Half Life 2 driving the buggy through the tunnels.

Milton Keynes, I stumbled into a bit of a greenspace that had a Dovehouse. I knew I wouldn't get a decent exposure, but had a try anyway. Not too happy with it, but think it could have had potential if things were a little different, I like the silhouette effect of the 2 doves looking at each other.

This was taken whilst doing the Bee shot above. I took several of the cat that look like a lot of things (IE, invisible icecream, evil mastermind etc) but the facepalm is the best.

Puz Palm (http://www.flickr.com/photos/zpyder/6048883135/) by Chris_Moody (http://www.flickr.com/people/zpyder/), on Flickr

This was at Haddon Hall up in Derbyshire. A long exposure, with some heavy shadows added. I like the textures and colour.
(http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6210/6049440390_390c3ae2e2_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/zpyder/6049440390/)
Roof beams (http://www.flickr.com/photos/zpyder/6049440390/) by Chris_Moody (http://www.flickr.com/people/zpyder/), on Flickr

And another processed shot (I couldn't help it) - I've not had much success with HDR stuff, I've tried a few times, but for some reason the HDR output always looks a bit flat. However I used a preset in photoshop which gave this overdone effect, but I like it. Pretty sure it's only because it looks dramatic. As far as the image goes I know it's pretty pants.

Some good stuff there, the Bee in flight in particular.  With anything like that in flight you've got to spray and pray a bit you've obviously thought about it right though as you've got the flower in there that's in focus as well, you've nailed the focus on the bee's eyes though so well done.

The couple of abstracty shots are good, particularly the roof beams but is it a bit wonky?  Might just be my eyes but it might need levelling out a touch so the beam going across the image is straight.

One thing I will say with the Duck shots is that they'd be better if you could get down a bit but that's not always possible, especially as it usually causes problems with the background.

And that cat face palm :D

Yeah, the duck shots were from a bridge so it wasn't possible to get low, but I'll try next time :D

You're right about the beam, though I'm not too bothered as it was kind of a test shot. The room was really badly lit and the photo was taken at high iso, without flash, with f4 I think, I was more seeing if it was possible to get a half decent hand held shot, and it was. I think I might use a tripod next time though if I want to do anything like this again, maybe set it so rather than have the beams at an angle, I have the camera facing straight up from the ground.

Next time get someone to hold your feet and dangle off the bridge, that'll get you a bit closer to there level, maybe a bit under it if your not careful though lol

Well its not turned out too bad for a test shot!  I do that sometimes, go and have a wander around somewhere and think next time I'll take my tripod or do something different but then never go back or if I do totally forget what I've thought of doing lol so don't leave it too long, especially since your an unemployed bum :P

Good shots overall, I really like the overexposed shot of the clouds, they look very ominous.

I like the sky in the processed HDR, but it needs something like a ruined church or castle, or maybe just a craggy rock in the foreground to capitalise on the ominous menacing feel. A processing technique to keep in the bag for when the right shot comes along though!

I love the bee in flight. I've tried that one a few times myself and never had the patience to keep at it long enough to get the shot.

A few from the new forest yesterday. We had some pretty nasty storms on Thursday, the forest was pretty amazing as large areas had been scoured by flash floods, all the grass etc was bent sideways and there were piles of leaves and twigs etc over a foot deep from water flowing through quite a way from the stream.

I wish I could have used a smaller aperture but as it was the camera was on the tripod extended as far as it'd go and on really leafy ground so was wobbling like hell :(

Its fine as it is really, don't think it make that much difference using a smaller apperture except to throw the background out a bit more.

You were right first time, bigger aperture means more DOF (1.8 bigger than 14) because it's actually (1/1.8 & 1/14)

Make sense?

Love the colour on the shroom and moss BTW

Never noticed that one was there, usually just use a exif plugin for firefox and all it was showing was the date and photographer fields.

Must have been fairly gloomy if if your reduced to 0.5s, Am sure I've seen a video somewhere showing someone using a refelector to help get some more light can't say I've tried it myself mind.

I should have taken a picture of the location, it was pretty unique. Dense woodland canopy sure, but the tree that the fungus was growing on had fallen at an angle and came to rest against another tree. Over time some shrubs had grown up, and this was on the underside, so I was basically photographing a 2cm wide mushroom growing on the underside of a wooden arch in the middle of dense woodland...

haha nice, sounds like a fun place to try and get a decent shot, certainly doesn't look like its upside down either.

Might try and remember from now on to get just a generic shot of the location where I've taken something, just to show where it was etc  I've done it once before with a frost macro but might help when explaining things though.

Probably the 2nd, if you were more side on to it so you could see more of the bug it would work better if it was something like a ladybird that had more detail on its back with its spots, however the 1st one is good because of the detail in it.

Still good photos though!

I'm thinking I wish I'd done the 2nd one portrait, to emphasise the beetle climbing to the top of the flower spike.  I agree about side on, but I didn't know if the beetle was going to fly off at any point so took as many photos as I could. Oh well :)

Actually you might want to try cropping off the right hand side of the image to make it portrait, was viewing the forum before on my phone and it only showed around half the photo in one go and it looked good.

Hmm, I might try that sometime :D Does make me wish I'd got the stem in the shot though, no reason why I couldn't have really either :(

Here's a selection, couple from Poole harbour and the rest from this weekend when I went on a Marine Natural History society field trip.

Totally unintentional but I managed to catch some critter in the mud squirting water into the air on the right hand side, looks like the Oyster Catcher was watching it.

Why is it that animals all seem to just *know* what the maximum "usable" distance is for whatever focal length you're using, and then position themselves just outside of it? I bet if I was using a 100mm macro the kingfisher and herons would have been half as far away... ><

Anyway, recently every time I have gone over a bridge near me I've seen an Egret looking rather elegant in the water, so figured I'd go back when the weather was good and see what I could do. Well, the Egret(s) weren't playing today and stayed on the far bank of the river, but there was a nice Heron, and then I noticed a Kingfisher make a diver 10m away. It took an hour to actually locate where they were spending most of their time (turns out there were 2 of them) and then they only perched on the other side of the bank, according to the exif data, 82m away. I do feel I have yet to take any really good images with the 100-400mm lens, though I'm not sure how much is me, how much is the subject distance/conditions, and how much is the capabilities of the lens :/

I should add that the the heron and kingfisher I resisted doing much PP on, but I had a play with Levels on the wagtail shot, using a darkly shaded area for the blacks, part of the upper grey wing for the grey, and the over exposed wing area for white. I think the original was alright, but this seems to work much better.

Well you've done the hard part by the looks of it, finding these sorts of birds ain't easy.  Now you just need to go get yourself a hide and get as close as you can and hope you can get some good stuff.

Suppose there's two types of photos with wildlife really, those where the subject fills the frame and shows lots of detail and those that show the subject in its environment.  These are obviously the later and actually there quite good, especially the first, actually they're all good looks like you've got the focus right on all 3 of them.

Must admit its something I need to do more, got a few of the subject, just not much with them in the environment hmm

Oh and have you thought of putting your photos in more groups on flickr, I've been sticking mine in and getting quite a few views you might get some people adding comments or giving some pointers.

I used to put my photos in groups and yeah, you're right, you get a lot more coverage. It's just an extra time sink though. I guess I should do some housekeeping some time. I always feel bad when I join a new group and blast 30 photos in a take up the whole group pool in one go. The ones that limit additions are a pain too!

I've been going down to Hengistbury Head with Kathryn when she goes bird ringing. Hopefully should be some good practice in future for sunsets and sunrises as they set up the night before and then get down there before sunrise to start. On Saturday we were up at 5 to get there. Tried a bit of HDR and got some funky results. Looking forward to learning HDR more and refining it, most people say that over timeyou get used to just making small tweaks, but at the start the "HDR effect" suckers you in to overdoing it, which I know the below are overdone, but they're the best I've managed on my limited HDR forays so far!

Actually managed to get close enough to fill the frame on this Little Egret. They were stalking along the shoreline parallel to the path. To start with I scared it away whilst setting up, so learned from the experience and set up a little way in front of the direction it was walking. 10 mins later it was pretty much right in front of me :D

After the sunrise I noticed some wood pilings on a groyne that were eroded, but the grain was pretty cool, or thats what I thought anyway!

Agreed rather good that one!

Been trying to get either a sunset or sunrise with the decent weather but when I went out yesterday evening it was just thick cloud doh

Cheers guys.

The HDR rather helped with the purple sunrise shot. It was misty, but not that much, the HDR helped to highlight it. I'm definitely going to explore this more the next time I'm down there for the sunrise, my next challenge is getting to the end of Hengistbury head where all the beach huts are, before the sun comes up, to get some shots down there! It's a couple of miles :S

Just wait another couple of weeks/months, means that the sunrise is that bit later so you can get up at a more resonable times, shame the strength of the sun will be that bit less but still might be worth it.

Problem is we/they get there for the bird ringing *just* before dawn, doubt Kathryn will want to get up 30 mins earlier than necessary!
