Hi Marik,

Welcome to the forums.  From the peoples links on your web site Im guessing you use the Talk Photography forums.

Dan

redneck

welcome to the boards mate.

Marik

Nope, I actully use the Trickery.net forums which has a fantastic photography area. A few people on there use Talk Photog though :D

Serious

Do you like photographing animals specifically or is it just you only have those on the web?

Marik

Yes, I like taking photos of animals, but I have some portraits and other photos which will be going up soon.

How good is the kit lens?

Marik

heh nice, Im currently looking at getting a 1.4x TC

snellgrove

Yeah, been tempted by the 1.4 too, its a cheap way of getting more reach - but you do lose some quality..  might be worth it though. Ill probably have a go with one some time, a local shop where I got my 70-200 has them in stock.

The kit lens is ok, Serious. Its 18-55 mm F3.5 to 5.6. It can be a bit dark, if anything and it is not quite as good as the L glass - it just lacks that extra sharpness.

The two lenses together mean your fairly covered from very wide, to reasonably zoomed in.

The 300+ / 400mm lenses are horrific, money wise :( cant afford it, let alone justify it no matter how much I want to zoom in that bit more!

Serious

I have been hearing the same from others about the kit lens although I tend to have a very wide range in what I photograph I was thinking about sports and night stuff which my Panasonic doesnt handle too well. I had an x2 teleconverter for my old Practika BC1, while it does give you double the zoom it also halves the available light. This will probably be acceptable for most things. A 1.4x will up f/5.6 to f/8 and a 2x will up it to f/11.

There are plenty of expensive lenses out there, what you have to balance is quality, expense and versatility, its not always easy. I have been looking at superzooms and TBH this area at least looks a bridge too far IMO, better to have a pair of good lenses than one that runs out.

As for the 3-400mm lenses, go have a look at the Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 zoom beastie about Ã,£5K!.

Marik

ah I felt that Id rather get the 1.4 TC than spend a few grand on a new lens ;)

If i get into my photography enough, I might end up spending more for some bigger lenses though.
