Well theres nothing wrong with my 450D but wondering if i could do better with a different camera.

First of all, any idea what my stuff is worth if i sold it?

450D body mint
4Gb SD card
EF-S 18-55 IS lens with UV filter
eyepiece extender
IR remote
Battery grip with 2 additional batteries, not canon but works perfectly, slight marks from use

Next, what to replace it with? only really need a body and mem card for now, i have canon lenses and the other bits i can pick up as and when i need them. Thinking 40D or 50D (when the 60D is out the prices might drop a bit) or (i wish) a 7D (these any good?)

Dont need video on it, just want a fast camera with good image quality. Needs to be noticeably better than the 450D though or its pointless.

£350-75 if youre lucky?

Total guestimate based on what I saw of 400Ds being sold and adding random figures on for everything else.

Binary Shadow

just been checking the 7D on dpreview, seems an awesome camera, just missing £5-600 after selling my stuff ouch!

Aye, when I win the lottery, or some rich relative Ive never heard of dies and leaves me their entire fortune...

So say you sold your kit and upgraded to a 40/50D or 7D - what lens are you going to be left with?

Youve already got a fair few accessories, why not buy a new lens and a tripod?

I remember when I had my 300D and 18-55. I bought a Canon 10-22mm and it really changed everything for me. I had this amazing new range to play with IQ that staggered me.

I used to go on trips with nothing but the 300D and the 10-22. It forced me to use the lens to its limits and expand my creativity.

Check out the UWA lenses (anything between 10-25mm), telephoto (70+mm, like the 70-300mm) or something different like a 100mm macro.

Each route will open new areas for you more than a new body will.

I have a couple of tripods, admittedly they are a bit cheap but seem to do the job ok, and a monopod.

If i sold what iv listed i would be left with an EF-S 55-250 F4-5.6 IS, an EF 28-135 F3.5-5.6 IS, Sigma 70-200 F2.8 + 1.4x adaptor, an eos 3 35mm body and my speedlight 430 EX II flash.

Im tempted to sell the EF-S 55-250 F4-5.6 IS as using it at full zoom (which is where im usually sat) i get some slight darkening in the corners of the images, its really obvious in thumbnails.

I hardly use my EF 28-135 F3.5-5.6 IS, i think i should use it more tbh.

Id like some more length, was considering a Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

The reason im thinking of a new body is the button layout and quick dial that my camera lacks. That and i find the metering can be a bit off sometimes on my 450D and i wish it would focus a bit quicker, seems to take an age at times.

EDIT:

Im not surprised you used the 10-22 everywhere, id want to as well after spending £500 on one! Ill have to see if theres a sigma/tamron cheaper route.

IMHO sell those two - keep the sigma 70-200 and go buy a Tamron 17-50 F2.8

17-50 and 70-200 will have you well covered and youll have f2.8 across that range - those other two lenses would be pretty redundant.

Binary Shadow

I think the only reason I still have the EF-S 55-250 is that the sigma weighs a ton so its good to just have it to hand, but its not great when zoomed right in as said so i might as well sell if i can.

That sounds like a good plan, the tamron have IS or OS or whatever they call it?

EDIT: Ah yes appears to be called VC on Tamrons

Dave

yeah there is one with and one without

I went for the one without as I dont see the point at that range

I quite fancy getting a decent 70-200 or 50-150 at some point though need to get a new body first as Ive been trying a bit of gig photography and would like higher ISO, better autofocus etc...

Tamron 10-24 FTW if you want a cheep wide angle

Binary Shadow

So if i sell the lenses i dont need

EF-S 18-55 IS - £50 if im lucky
EF-S 55-250 IS - £150 if im lucky
EF 28-135 IS - £200 if im lucky

Should be enough to get the tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC and i can think about getting the tamron 10-24 later on

XEntity

Dont get it from Simply, unless you dont mind getting a grey import and potentially a long wait/sh*t customer service!

Edit: SRS (srsmicrosystems.co.uk) do the VC for about 380, no idea how good the company is havent looked yet, but dont do grey imports

Amazon direct have the non VC for £280

There may be better deals, just be careful who you buy from and what you get..

Ive got a Tamron SP AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II LD Asp. (IF) Lens. To be honest I wasnt expecting to get much use out of this, but as with the other people who use very wide angle lenses its become a firm favourite. Closed down to 24mm and it gives a decent group photo lens. Way out at 10mm and it takes photos of things you couldnt get in otherwise.

It certainly fits in well with the Canon EF 28-135mm. Add in a long lens and you have almost everything covered. Only thing missing is a Macro, if you want to take close ups.

You might want to consider the 60D too, when a full review gets put out.

Across all the lenses I have I have no real macro my 18-200 says macro, but the performance is really sh*t, and dont fancy spending another 300+ on a lens just for macro, just dont think Id use it that much, and tbh could get a compact that that performs really well for that range for at least half the price!

Try not to hijack your thread, but anyone got a good cheap macro?
