1.0 Corsa b problems (perhaps!)
on: April 12, 2010, 15:40:20 PM
Hi All

As per title, i drive a 1998 Corsa b with the 1.0 3 cyclinder engine.

a couple of things which ive noticed (whilst id like to point out the car is running fine)
1) There is a slight oil residue around the head gasket - it doesnt appear to be leaking but is there nontheless, should i be concerned?

2) It sounds like a diesel. No seriously, its clunky and honestly sounds like a diesel - any ideas?

Id like to also point out that it is a cheap car. It isnt worth taking to Vauxhall for them to charge me more than what i paid for it to tell the engine needs a rebuild or some nonsense, just wondering what your opinions are. Should i leave them be or is there a likely probable cause/effect of the above?

Cheers guys :)

Probably a minor issue, wipe it off, if it comes back then its probably leaking from the gasket, but unlikely to be enough to worry about but...

Check the water in the radiator, if there is any contamination there then the oil is leaking into the engine and probably water into the oil too. Start putting a few quid away for a replacement car.  If the water is fine then just check the oil level level regularly.

Head gaskets arent normally that difficult to replace, Ive done one on an old car of mine and another on my brothers Vauxhall. Ive known cars with oil leaks to go on for years without dying.

from what Ive heard..... those 3 cylinder engines are crap.... which is probably why it sounds like its on its last legs

maybe record the sound it makes and put it up here ?  its easier to listen to it than explain how to listen for bad noises instead of the usual racket...

whats the mileage?

oil has probably run down from a leaking cam cover gasket, these fail from the factory im sure of it.

noise.. its a 3 cyl.. enough said really but again, service history? oil changes? hydraulic lifters could be gunged up and rattling..

I wouldnt worry too much if its a cheap motor, you will replace it at sometime in the future, just spend enough to keep running but dont go wasting your money on headgasket replacement or component replacement unless you intend to keep it.

I have been unfortunate on my last couple of car purchases around £2000 mark, then i just gave up and bought a Seat Ibiza 2000 plate for £600, it has less problems that the previous motors, it also sounds like a diesel but ive heard its a common issue with the 1.4 MPI, im just thankful it has no dashboard lights on =P i doubt ill even bother with the cambelt, which is the first thing i would do after purchasing a car.

Cheap to buy, cheap to repair, cheap to run =P I would rather own a corsa anyday than some of the french sh*t i have bought recently!
