29er with Rigid forks?
on: August 06, 2011, 16:53:44 PM
Looking for the above, best price and somewhere with 0% Finance would be nice.

Not rigid but could swap forks for Charge/Pace or similar

GT Karakoram 29er 1.0

GT Karakoram 29er 2.0

On-One 29er with Rigid Carbon Forks

Preferably would like a cheaper groupset though to bring the price down and not pink!

Man up and get the pink one.

The Scandal 456 is a bloody fantastic bike.

See if you can splash the extra £100 for the british racing green version.

I've got the steel 26" On-One and it's fapping amazing.
Andy who used to be on here got a 29er in steel, single speed and rode up some crazy hills.

Problem is my size, its a long way to drive to try a bike out, and i want it on 0% finance which i think they do. I'll pop into a local shop in the week to try out some Trek 'Gary' Fishers.

I also confirmed that Carbon Rigid forks don't support my weight, so i'll be looking for something like Charge Nozzles.

It's no contest.  The Gary Fishers are good, the genesis geometry is wierd though.
It's worth the trip to try one at the warehouse,  the scandal frame is something else.

The forks are worth £150 new, so you should have no problem selling them on and covering the cost of the nozzles.

Edit.

Can't get nozzles in 29".  You'll be wanting something like Surly Karate Monkeys, Kona P2's or Salsa Cromoto's.

I can't see a weight limit for the carbon forks, and only two reports of people having problems.  This could be down to a bad batch, from previous experience, On-One/Planet-X warranty is one of the best in the business.

I do like it, i would prefer it with a cheaper groupset though to push the price down a bit, if you add another £100 for a different colour thats a £1000, seems a bit extreme for a starter bike! :P

Why are you going for a 29er?
They are still quite new, and command a premium.
You could get a very good bike for £5-600.

My size, and just to have a go on one, tried a Specialized Carve Comp today 29er, about £1000 and was very very big bike, pleased by that. :P Tried a Gary Fisher and didn't compare in size.

Very similar to the GaryFishers.

It is a Gary Fisher, the Marlin, Mamba and Cobia are Fishers, but Fisher has sold out to Trek so the newer have been renamed.

As for bikes, i've been reading about it more and i might even end up with a big framed 26er purely for the fact i have owned loads of them and i keep having these discussions with shop staff e.g. no i dont need hydraulic brakes, front suspension or a 29er, i was off roading with a rigid frame when sachs twist grips came out, and when hydraulic brakes cost the price of a small car, and i was fine enough, they just dont get it.

PS I will end up with hydraulic brakes though. :P

Not quite, but very very similar.  I used to work for a Gary Fisher/Trek dealer.

They do have a point though.  Hydraulic disc brakes are a luxury item, I'd disagree with front suspension as long as it was a quality unit.
Never ridden a 29er so couldn't comment.

I really can't recommend an On-One enough.

Shame.

I don't really rate Trek's, they are usually the ones you get as hire bikes, I've always liked Genesis Geometry on my Gary Fishers.
Can't believe they did that to Klein though.

There not bad, they used to make large frames but are massively under equipped for the prices they ask, imo the brand might be strong but i in the past refused to pay that much for the brand alone, i tested a Gary Fisher out the other day and in comparison to a Specialized it was tiny, i tried a 21" 29er Specialized and it was massive on me, even the bloke in the shop was shocked just how big they are in proportion to someone as big as me.
