http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1180194/The-car-makes-speeding-history.htmlHehe, didnt know what to make of this.
On the one hand if it was mandatory across the board, it might work, until people figure out how to disable them.
And then I read:
The system offers the driver two modes - voluntary and advisory - as well as an override button.
So whats the point? The people that speed and drive recklessly will just disable it and itll be driving as usual.
I doubt itd make those drivers that insist on driving at 2/3 the speed limit actually drive at the speed limit.
About the only use I can see is, in the articles words:
This innovative technology could help any driver avoid the unnecessary penalties of creeping over the speed limit...
Which is fair enough, theres plenty of places around here where "safety" cameras are set ridiculously close to the speed limit at the bottom of hills and just after slip roads as a means of catching people going 1mph over the limit. The system might help prevent some people going over the limit. But again, as the article says, it might make some drivers stop thinking.
Can envision scenarios on single carriageways where the roads clear and the person in front goes off at say 70mph in a 60mph zone, and with the length of the road, a tailback ensues when the car behind cant speed up past the limit to match the traffic. I guess its one step away from doing away with cameras and just using the £G network to broadcast your speeds, and when and where you exceeded the limits to the govt ><
