GPS sports watches, heart rate monitors etc
on: September 20, 2012, 20:21:28 PM
Just curious if anyone has any recommendations? I've been getting into running and cycling lately and am using the endomondo app on my phone. It'd be good to be able to just use a watch though, especially if it does heart rate. I saw something on play on their one day sale, think it was a Garmin 410 CX for about £130 which seemed pretty good. Not just looking for myself though, but maybe as an xmas present for the GF.

I have a garmin 410 with the luxury heart monitor strap thing (soft material, much nicer than the rubber crap ones).

Paid £130 from amazon a few months back. Great kit IMO, and the virtual trainer is fantastic, helps me run to a set pace.

Bezel control can prove to be a bit awkward with sweaty hands but normally you set it going and have set up your cyclical screens before you run, so only need to hit the start/stop button rather than go near the bezel.

Yet to upload any runs though or use the online tools but they look decent and my running club mates have 110s and 310s who say the online functions are great.

Sounds like a good review! Tbh with regards to online functions, I'd be more inclined to export and upload to endomondo if I can, as that's where my previous history is and I like the option of setting a route on my phone and following it, or at least seeing on my phone where I was with the watch.

Are there any functions on the watch to keep you going in the right direction at all (like different tone beeps for go left/right) or is the GPS purely for tracking distance and logging it?

There is a navigation function, more of a compass and distance pointer, probably alright for stealthy geocaching but no "route" keeper like you mention. I've used it to find my way back to my car and hotel after running in a place I'm not familiar with.

I mainly use it for workout tracking and pacing but run keeper accepts the uploads and I can view the map on there if I bothered uploading it. The garmin software does speed, elevation, map, pace and other such things too, I bought it because I got fed up with carrying my phone and when using the armband my phone being on display for all to see especially when I'm running in random places I'm not familiar with.

I got the Garmin Forerunner 310 last christmas and rarely go out with it - it even comes out on competition day.

Garmin make some quality kit and their support is pretty good too.
