Ideas for new car?
on: January 02, 2013, 06:45:18 AM
So I'm about to lose my company vehicle in feb and need to find a suitable replacement... I'm looking for a budget vehicle that'll handle motorway munching (25 to 35k per year), also reliable. Looking at the moment at less than £2,000 budget and something relatively cheap to insure as I only have motor bike no claims which I don't wish to transfer.

Also places like car supermarkets, any one recommend them or is private the only way to go?

With that criteria, you're going to be looking at Passat's, Mondeo's and Vectra's with starship mileage.

most places will copy over most if not all of your NCD from your motorbike to a new policy anyway (without transferring)
(as long as you haven't been in any accidents in anything else etc...)

private buying is way way way better than a car supermarket type place

and if you're not too car savvy, get an AA check or simmiler ;)

you might be able to get an extra NCD as a former company driver - might have to phone rather than compare on websites though.
That many miles, with that kinda budget - I'd go German.

Kinda strange your losing your company car & doing that sorta mileage.

do you have a minimum mpg requirement?

You will get more for your money with a bigger petrol engine.

Skoda Octavia is a perfect mile crunching work horse. 1.8 or 2.0tdi should be in your budget, although tdi will be higher mileage.

I heard that you had to transfer Ncb over and then couldn't use it on the second insurance. Only difference is if you accrue car Ncb then you can maintain two ncbs.

Company Ncb is going to be zero as I have claimed for scratches, etc, if it was my own car I'd have driven it with them, or touched up...but no I opted for the cheaper at the time but more expensive in the long run route.

Losing it due to a crap company vagueness. The mileage I do more than qualifies me for one but I have to give a project code to charge it to... As a pen tester I don't have a home project, so no projects will cover the cost... I lose the car at end of its lease.

A decent mpg would be nice.

What's the thoughts on a diesel fiesta?

Or the alternative motoring method of buying a 12mth mot car for £500 then flogging it when it fails and buying another?.

The Fiesta Diesels, C2's etc do mental mileage for the money and can be picked up reasonably cheap, ideally though as had been pointed out already i'd be looking for an Octavia or Passat or Leon/Toledo 1.9tdi, i have my eye on one locally for my next purchase in budget spec like Clocked's old one, although i think this one has front electric windows!

I wouldnt fancy doing 30k miles per year in a fiesta.

A middle sized Saloon car would be best. Octavia, 3 series bmw, Laguna, s type jag.
If you don't mind the image you can get some bargain Rover 75 CDT's that are full of BMW engineering and one of the nicest cars to drive and bullet proof.

Apart from the Longbridge cars being better all round.

I've had nothing but problems with high mileage german cars, but my Jap's been smooth sailing.

I think the reliability of German cars can be called into question based on the previous owners, which seems less of a problem with Japanese cars.

Used to do 75k a year in a cramped Astra van so a fiesta for an average sized lad shouldn't be an issue. :P

if you tell them you have Z ncb on something else, they'll give you at least some free, if not match it on a new policy just to get you to sign up :-)
(might have to phone a few tho)

When I went from a bike to a car, the insurance company wouldn't take my bike NCD into consideration.

So right... Just got a quote for buying my company vehicle.

Ford Focus Style 1.6 petrol, 58 plate.

72,000 miles or near enough on the clock.

£4231 is the quote, with 1 year warranty.

Insurance fully comp is surfing 800 or so.

Reliability wise its not skipped a beat since I've had it and its always had a ford service on the mileage markers. One minor bump to front right but all that damage got replaced or repaired by a large body shop that the insurers recommended.

So 5.2k I could just buy my current car, its out of budget and basically means I'll be taking out a loan when I don't really want to but I know every single mile on that car was mine and I know it's entire history.

Or... The other route which is grab something like an Audi A3 or Fiesta Diesel with astronomical mileage for about £1000 and insure it for £1300ish, possibly avoiding a loan I don't want to take out really, but basically running the car until it breaks or fails an mot then just buying a new banger and starting over.

What would you do?
