MR2 finally admits defeat
on: July 03, 2012, 14:00:44 PM
8 years I've had it, and it has finally failed its MOT for something not trivial :( Mr Toyota quoted £650+ to sort it, sourced the parts myself and getting local mechanic to fit them for less than half :)

Front disc warped, so needs 2 discs as you replace in pairs

Front pads where at 50% but still need replacing, I thought 8 years of driving and having half left was good, the rears amazingly have 70% left  (god knows how long the previous owner had these brakes on, assumedly he didn't just fit new brakes then sell!)

Handbrakes not working properly and is only 15% effective so an MOT fail.

Windscreen washer pump has given up so it just spits water onto the window :muttley:

Steering rack boots worn, MOT fail.

I guess this has all been building up with use  Wub

I'd consider all that relatively minor/wear and tear stuff, I can't imagine owning a car and not having to change the brake pads at least!

8 years 50% wear on pads, I'm kinda gutted I didn't get the chance to decade them

Steering Rack, perhaps wear and tear but not minor :P

You can't be doing a lot of mileage then?

Did you not have any of this on advisory from last year, or the year before? Seems strange to all popup this year.

the rack yes, but surely the boots can be replaced separately?

I changed garages for the first time this year as I didn't think the other Toyota in Nottingham was doing a good job.

I was correct.

I don't really know what they are, like bushes i just know they wear

I am surprised they didn't pop up as advisories though. How often do you actually drive the car Matt, I'm guessing not much at all? Also, could be the new garage just likes finding things to fix

I was correct.

You might still be partially wrong, as Clocked has pointed out the new garage could be looking for work.

Possibly, though it definitely is pulling to one side and wobbling the steering wheel when braking!

If you've not used the car in a long time go for a 10 minute drive and brake a bit, see if any one wheel is hotter than the others afterwards, you could just have a stuck/sticking caliper/pad and may also be the reason your front disc has warped! I guess the wobbling/pulling could be down to the disc being warped anyway though.
