Need a new motor
on: May 28, 2006, 02:22:57 AM
Sold my A4 a while back and bought myself a 306 xsi, its not bad but its no Audi thats for sure :D

Its a 51 plater, kicks out about 138bhp no idea on the 0-60, but would like something i can play with,

considered:

Civic VTI (did they make a vti coupe?)
Golf 1.8T / A3 1.8T
MG ZR 180?
Imports as well i would consider

Spending say 4-5k max so throw some ideas at me please :)

Toyota Glanza V

130bhp 1.3 and pig-ugly jap styling

Cheap to run as it has a low-boost mode (obiously, its a turbocharged car with 100bhp/litre) light weight, got a strut-brace in the boot as standard so they handle really well. :D and can be tuned to over 300bhp if you so wished....

pics I stole from the toyota owners club... this ones modified a bit, but you get the idea.

They are all imports, by the way...  known as the Starlet in the UK (older Glanzas are known as Starlet GT Turbos) - prices are a bit steep (typical japanese depreciation!) for the age of the car, looking at £4 to 5k for a decent one.

Picture of one I saw, at a UJCC meet:

(They do come in other colours than white, honest! )

If you put a wide arch kit on would it make it a Glanza Swollen ?

306 GTi?

306 Rallye? < fairly sure theyre 2L 16Vengines, but I cant even find one on ebay or a quick look on auto trader.

Are you looking for luxury? The Golf and Audi say youre looking for a heavy car and they are just slow but luxurious - compared to a 306 Rallye, Id imagine.

If you saved a bit more money then you could get a Lexus GS400? If you could afford the petrol?

Maybe a cheap Merc? 190E AMG model? Or Cosworth model, you can get those under £4000. The AMG model is slower and has a 2.5L engine, the cosworth model has 2.3L engine and is faster than the AMG model.

Snell, Categorised as a Super Mini, nice motor, drove them back in the days i worked for toyota, but seriously they are very cramped for me, no space to move found it hard to get my legs under the steering then using the wheel was a bit hard :D.

mr_roll

306 GTI / 306 Rallye ? Im selling a 307XSI  :P think about the fact that Peugeot didnt make a GTI in the 307 so thats why i went for the XSI and i kind of want to steer away from french cars again, i prefer german or jap but within reason, really dont want to remortgage a house to pay for repairs/servicing :) Also would prefer not to go backwards, 307 to 306 isnt a good decision for me :)

Ok lets look at some figures:

306 GTI-6: 167bhp / 8.5s 0-60
306 Rallye: 167bhp / 8.5s 0-60
307 XSI: 138bhp / 8.9s 0-60
A3 T Sport 3dr: 147bhp / 7.9s 0-60
Golf GTI T 3dr: 150bhp / 8.2s 0-60
Civic 1.6vti 3dr: 157bhp / 7.7s 0-60

Judging by the money im spending i think perhaps i will have probs finding a decent A3, but the Golf is a fine contender, ive owned the same engine before and know that various places can offer the remap / tuning deal for about £450 to increase to around 190+bhp afaik so its a simple upgrade if i wanted some more power.

The reason i started to consider japs is because Honda have the great belief of producing engines that produce 100bhp per litre which is great, however im wondering if modifying will produce the same end effects as a turbo engine i.e. £s spent x increase in bhp, and whether the figures will work out better if i went for a turbo motor.

Also, the Golf / A3 / Civic are classed as Small Family vehicles, the GS / Mercs are bigger more luxury cars, but the Golf etc dont fall into that category.

Also i have considered such cars as the Supra 3l non turbo, it produces over 200 bhp, has a nice 0-60, but they never released a non turbo in the uk, so it would have to be an import, i was quoted by my insurance company for one and it was about £60 more per year than the golf, which isnt to bad, however im not certain on servicing costs and what can go wrong that will be expensive to repair so ill look into that a bit more for now,

Clio 172 is a nice motor, but they are holding price quite well around 7k so a little over my intended budget, which is a shame :D

I know what Id buy for under £1000 that does 0-60 in around 7.0-7.2 (Half loaded) and 136mph top speed - but I wouldnt recommend it for your street cred:)

Id avoid the stanza - seen too many of them pass through our place in terrible condition - and most of the ones sold here end up there!

4-5k Id get a 944 Turbo - you wont get anything better for the money.

Toledo 2.3 V5?
Leon 1.8 T-Sport/T-Cupra?

Not badged as a VW, but justa Bora and Golf respectively.  Plus the Leon Feels better than the golf of a similar age.

Sdp, south west and funnily enough close ish to torque imports :p just worked it out after reading something on a motoring forum :)

Beaker,

yeh considered the Leon just forgot to add it to the list, but its the same classification as the Gti t, a3 t for me, the same 1.8t lump :D

I also read they do a v5 golf as well, im guessing it will be harder to find one, and the price might be a bit more but im semi sure its near enough the same performance as the 1.8t, ill have to check
