Ouch!
on: October 27, 2012, 11:33:43 AM
So this is what proper whip lash feels like! A VW transporter van pulled out on me when I was doing about 50 last night, has about 20m to slow down and ploughed into him.

I'm stiff as a board today feels like all my upper body is jammed.

I will be claiming that this is 100% HIS fault.

Some pics for fun:

the sand is where my powersteering fluid went, and the lines I have drawn on indicate my skid marks (tee hee) and distances they start and finish.

its getting to the point now where so many bad, distracted and unconfident drivers on the road having a near miss is almost a daily thing.

I will be investing in one of these for the car, and also for the van if I don't get sacked over this.

A bloke failed to give way to me yesterday early morning at a roundabout, i jumped on the brakes and missed him by centimetres,  he literally sh*t himself by the look of his face, it seems to be happening more often, i have noticed a rise in people not paying attending to their surroundings.

Last year a car failed to realise that:

A - the road ended at a junction
B - Said junction was a roundabout
C - cars were on the roundabout and had right of way

It was pretty scary but thankfully being fully aware of the risk I was 90% expecting it (10% refusing to believe anyone could be so stupid and oblivious). I think I missed him by about 50cm. One of those times that your reaction is to brake, and fast, rather than to honk your horn. I suspect he carried on driving off without even realising how close he was to causing a serious accident. I suspect a lot of accidents on roundabouts happen not between said retarded drivers and the "victim", but rather the "victim" and driver behind. I was lucky no one ploughed into me too!

Yesterday when I drove in to uni I nearly went into a lady on a roundabout as she had forgotten her car had indicators. I know it was my fault really, you're taught to not rely on people using said indicators, but given she was driving pretty fast and road position suggested she'd be going straight on, it was quite a surprise when her car started to swing round the roundabout :(

Also curious to know what HIS van looked like!!?!

The front drivers side wing was crumpled and bumper cracked and the wheel looked to have a bit of strange camber, and the drivers door wouldnt open fully so a fair but of damage, my van came off a lot worse though.

I drove it home about 0.5mile with no powersteering or water in the radiator, they had to drive 30miles home and they left pretty sharpish, was quite suspicious actually.

Well you'll have absolutely zero trouble with him being found liable, did you get all his details, reg, etc?

Get your neck/back checked out as well, that doesn't sound like something you should ignore.

The van was owned by the NHS so should be ok.

First thing I did when I got out of my bro's car after he was tail-ended was photograph the other car. That gave me a record of the car, the numberplate and the face of the driver.

Always worth keeping a cheap camera in car for that option. Those that leave quickly often have good reasons to do so, like being on drugs/alcohol/no insurance/stolen car, although they might also just panic... With that photo it doesn't matter if they leave, there is still the evidence.

Useful bump that, any updates two weeks later? How's your neck/back?

Not a great deal really. I've been disappointed by the insurance company. The knackered van was collected last Thursday and written off on Friday. My courtesy van arrived yesterday.
No word about if the other side is contesting or admitting liability yet.

I might have made a mistake when taking the other vans reg number got a W instead of an M. So don't know if that will effect anything.
Just slow progress really.

My neck and back seem ok now. They were really bad last week though had a few days off work with it. Still get twinges and clicks in my lower back from time to time.

Nearly an entire year on from when someone drove into my parked car and drove off without leaving a note (but there was a witness) and my insurance company (Admiral) have only just passed the claim on to my solicitors. Up until now I didn't even know the name of the other driver, but now I do!

I suspect I made the mistake of not reporting it to the police, but it was late and we wanted to just go home. If I'd have called up and maybe got a crime number (hit and run) maybe the police would have been able to go to the other cars registered address and check for damage, if that had happened I'd imagine it'd have been case closed early on.

Now I just am waiting for the letter saying they can't process it and I'll never get my £210 excess back. Only reason I claimed in the first place was that the guy on the phone at Admiral said if it was him he would, and that there'd be a good chance of getting the excess back, though it may take some time.
