Would you recommend the MR2 as a good car to get to learn about cars? Since starting the new job as a driving instructor the current car doesnt get used so I could change for something fun, with a good community behind it and a bit of potential for changing bits around (springs cooler, other tweaks etc, maybe even a Veilside bodykit if I want to really chav it up).

From what Ive heard access isnt the best being rear(ish) engined, but Ive always wanted an MR2 (really the boxy one, but the mk2 is lovely as well and has aged very well) and since it wouldnt need to be available as a daily driver I could afford to have it off the road whilst fiddling.

Is it worth getting one that needs a bit of work done (not body stuff) and teaching myself how to do stuff?
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

Youd honestly be better going for a decent one as it stands, and then improving that (Performance)- unfortunately (From when I went looking) it looked as if ones that needed a bit of attention had been totally neglected by the previous owner, and or totally thrashed 100% of the time.

Simple mods can get a rev3+ turbo to 300bhp+ (Decat, exhaust, boost controller and uprated intercooler) but that seems to be as far as youd go on standard fuelling. Im hoping to wire in my emerald M3D this coming weekend. Then need to get it remapped.

The access hasnt been too much of a problem so far, I got the timing belt changed in 3 hours without taking the engine out (A common faux pas) and changed the camshaft cover gaskets in about an hour and a half. Well see how well it strips and rebuilds when I get the new pistons for my upcoming GT3071 turbo conversion!

Suspension etc is all very easy to work around and access to everything else is generally good, and well thought out - even the plastic clips and screws holding trim on are extremely well thought out and durable.

There is a hell of a lot of stuff available for them, and there are quite a few reputable suppliers of tuning parts. Ive been buying only what I have had to and making what I can - but thats just me! Most people prefer to buy bolt ons - which is a good a way to go as any. As long as you do it yourself! For me, not doing the work to a car yourself totally devalues the mods - its like picking parts out of a catalogue and getting someone to fit it! Unthinkable imo...
