Tyres - Minimum req.
on: July 07, 2011, 01:30:30 AM
The tyres on my van are now 1.6mm in the centres and 1.8-1.9mm on the edges due to over inflation by someone at some point.

My boss tells me its ok to have below 1.6mm in the centres if there is more tread over the rest of the 3/4's of the centre of the tyre.

The law does not read like this to me it reads, you must have at least 1.6mm of tread across the centre 3/4s part of the tyre, so in fact the dead centre parts of my tyre are now on the legal limit.

I have had 3 conversations with him about it (Tuesday night, Wednesday), i even offered to come into work out of my work hours and take it to our local tyre place to get them replaced.

He tells me due to the extra tread left on the outer edges that there is still 2000 miles left in them.

So, your thoughts?

Your boss is a retard who doesn't give 2 shizzs about your safety, 1.6mm is the utter utter lowest you can have it, and at that point your braking distance is reduced significantly.

ie,
At the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, the stopping distance is increased by 36.8% on the hot rolled asphalt and 44.6% on the smooth concrete.

Oh, and afaik if you get pulled over YOU get the points not him, 3 per illegal tyre.

exactly.... the "center 3/4" bit really just means, the main part of the tyre so people don't get confused as the tread trails off at the sides !

persoanlly... I'd refuse to drive it... how many are like that ?   it's 3 points and £60 per tyre :o

The law says "A minimum of 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference (see illustration below)."

That advise is repeated on lots of websites, so yeah your boss is an idiot.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I think the fine is more than that (or can be at least)

also note it's per tyre so if it's on all 4 then it's banhammer time.
