get a 77-85 Toyota Hilux with rust spots. All props to Landies for hardcore offroading, but the Toyotas drivetrain invincibility and relative economy give it the win in most situations.
4x4 isnt really needed for most fire roads and the like either, front wheel drive can be nice, and ground clearance with skid plates can be handy, but just in the roughest situations.
